Reality Check? Edmunds Sums Up Toyota as Stale, Out Of Date, And Appealing To Lower Economic Status

In December, 17.9 percent of car shoppers considered Toyota vehicles -- 2.3 percentage points below levels seen in December 2009, before the 2.3 million-vehicle recall for potentially sticky accelerator pedals. Overall, Edmunds finds that 2010 consideration for Toyota vehicles was down about 3.8 percentage points year over year.

In 2010, Toyota was the only major automaker to see a drop in overall sales (-0.3%), causing it to lose its No. 2 spot in sales and market share to Ford. The decline came even as Toyota offered the highest year-over-year jump in dealer incentives, which were up 33 percent in 2010 from 2009, according to Edmunds.com.

"Toyota needs to overcome not just the PR damage sustained by last year's recalls, but also the reality that its models are stale," said Jessica Caldwell, Edmunds.com director of pricing and industry analysis.

Yeah, it was pretty brutal. I had to read it twice to believe it.

If there ever was a way to squander a seemingly insurmountable lead, this was it.

What is this world coming to! Toyota sold the most cars around the world of any brand in 2010. Tastes of most people must be stale, outdated, ...!

Everything is fine... Toyota is supposed to be Vanilla, that is why they are so successful; but for some reason that is an excuse for people here on this site to promote ignorance and hate.

I couldn't agree more. Everything about Toyota is stale and outdated. I would love to see them spice up their designs and come up with some more interesting interiors. As it stands, they are boring.

Yeah I am not syaing they couldn't use a little pep-me-up but I think since all of the 2010 recall issues and reporter BS A lot of their product designs were put on hold. This next year will say a lot about the auto giant! Hopefully they dont follow their current cowardly trend and grab the bull by the nutts. :)

Toyota manufacturing standards are excellent. They need to focus on design, human factors and software engineering. This article is incorrect to write off Toyota, he is confusing conservative with stale.

They pretty much taught the world how to make the modern car. The Camry and Corolla follow 5 year update cycles, so nothing unusual about that.

I guess Edmunds' perception has been tainted by what it believes about the unintended acceleration scandal. Toyota's vehicles aren't substantially different today than they were before the scandal swept the media, not too long ago. Similarly, some media channels are crooning enless praise for the New GM, which not too long ago, was bankrupt and sucking up billions of tax-payers' dollars in aid.

You know, it's stuff like this that makes me just a little bit reluctant to believe everything I see in print :-(

GM was bankrupt from years of poor management and being forced to create numerous poor vehicles just to pay the pensions and benefits of their employees for almost 2 decades, maybe more.

Being bankrupt has allowed them to completely re-structure and set new goals, create better vehicles and improve quality greatly. Everything about the company has changed and they really do have their shit together, Im extremely impressed with their new vehicles, the new CTS and Buick Regal are unreal.

sorry you are wrong these vehicles and others that are not released where in the pipeline for years, restructuring had nothing to do with it, in reality it slowed it down.

Interestingly enough, Toyota was the #1 retail brand of all brands in the USA for 2010 and the Camry again was the #1 selling car.
Not to say that makes them beautiful as taste is in the eye of the beholder but to call them stale is a stretch when they are selling so many vehicles. More than any other mfg!!!
This fact makes me think the author is out of touch with reality!

Toyota have built great reliable cars in the past. I think it is clear what has hurt them. This incredible drive to cut costs and the mega expansion to be the #1 in car sales. As for styling. Most people do not care about styling. As long as it is not offensive the car will sell if it has a good reputation for reliability or a loyal following. In spite of it slipping Toyota still enjoy incredible customer loyalty. Past Toyota owners are still buying Toyota's or they would not still be number one.If VW can cure or convey to the general public that it has reliable products it will sell every Passat etc. it can make. That's VW's challenge in the US.

Toyotas seem stale because you see one every 5 seconds on the street. It sold the most cars. What do you expect?

Toyota and Honda have both become Vanilla, they make appliances not cars. What happened to the days of the Supra, MR2, Prelude, S2000. Neither one of the Japanese giants make ANYTHING inspiring for drivers. They make safe (metaphorically) boring vehicles. Look at the Korean pretenders they have taken the Honda / Toyota model and added some zest and fun

Toyotas current line-up is the most exciting vehicle line-up available today.

The Avalon resembles a down-sized Bentley inside and out.

The Camry is the pinnacle of sedan design, with performance to match and beat every car in its class. The Camry offers poise, balance, acceleration, and handling that beats out the BMW 3-series.

The Matrix is the EVO/STI/VW R32 killer. All the performance of an EVO but at a fraction of the price.

Prius. Need I say more? I will… The Prius is the most technologically advanced vehicle ever created.

Toyota has all of it competitor’s cars covered with better performing, better looking cars than all of them. It’s the same thing that Lexus is doing to BMW/MB and what the LF-A did to Ferrari and Lamborghini. No matter what kind of car you like, there’s a Toyota or Lexus that represents the best of that type of vehicle.
