BMW Posts 20.8% Sales Gain In January - Mini Shoots Forward 22.4%
The BMW Group in the U.S. (BMW and MINI combined) reported January sales of 18,656 vehicles, an increase of 21.1 percent from the 15,410 vehicles sold in the same month a year ago.

"The combination of strong December sales and miserable weather in many areas provided a real challenge for January," said Jim O'Donnell, President and CEO of BMW of North America, LLC.  "On the other hand, the new BMW X3 and MINI Countryman played a strong role in January's percentage gain even though both continue building up their model range, which we will see in the next couple of months."

BMW Brand Sales

Sales of BMW brand vehicles increased 20.8 percent in January for a total of 15,905 compared to 13,163 vehicles sold in January, 2010.

In January, best performing vehicles included the new X3 SAV – officially on sale in the U.S. for only two weeks - up 273.3 percent to 1,075 units; the 5 Series, up 76.2 percent to 4,350 units and the X5, up 23.6 percent to 3,038 units.  The BMW SAV segment (X3, X5, X6) continues to show important growth with sales up 42.8 percent from the previous January.

BMW Pre-Owned Vehicles

In January, sales of BMW used vehicles (including certified pre-owned and pre-owned) increased 1.7 percent to 11,650 vehicles from the 11,451 vehicles sold in January 2010.

MINI Brand Sales

MINI USA reported sales of 2,751 automobiles in January, an increase of 22.4 percent from the 2,247 in January 2010.

i'm not surprised. the new 5-series is pulling traditional 7-series buyers as it's almost as luxe as the 7--but a hell of a lot less expensive in the $60s and $70s.

let's look as some FACTS: lexus sold 734 LS and BMW sold 626 7-series. what SHOCKING is that--given the $30,000 price differential--there's less than 100 cars difference.

Maybe in carblogs but in reality alot of people could care less that a car is 4 years old as a reason not to buy one i mean seriously, not to mention except for the LS600hl the LS competes with the 7 but its pricing falls in line with the 5 series. lol and what else is funny about your obvious bias is that you failed to list the numbers that Audi sold of the A8 that gave it a high increase which is pretty laughable by the way

"The Audi A8 saw a 900% increase in sales over last year
That didn't happen for the 7"

As usual BlackDynamite wins the award for most ignorant posts. Either that or you actually thought no one who can apply some rational logic to the numbers would read it. Which was it?

You're right, the 7 didn't have a 900% sales jump from January 2010. You know why? Because they had their giant gains in 2009 when the all-new 7-Series sales were being compared to the out of production 2008 model. By January 2010 the new 7-Series was entrenched and selling very successfully. The only reason Audi saw a 900% increase for the A8 is that they only sold 52 previous generation A8's in January 2010. Yes, 52. Meanwhile BMW was busy selling 1308 7's that same month. 1308 to 52. Since you are numbers challenged, that's twenty five 7's sold for every one A8. It's pretty easy to have giant gains in sales when you don't sell anything in the first place. It's a little bit harder when you're comparing them to successful figures. If Audi manages to gain 900% in January 2012 over January 2011, THEN I'll be impressed. Just like I will be if you ever manage to post something that isn't complete nonsense.

New 7 series sold 626 vs 450 for the new A8 last month. This is a little suprising as BMW usually outsells Audi 2:1 and usually kills them in the 7 vs A8, both cars just recently came out, in fact I'm not sure the A8 is fully launched yet...

JRob, ease up a bit, I think BMW sold like 75 7 series one month at the end of the old model production so 52 for the A8 isn't so shocking..

Insolence are you serious? Do me favor since I guess in middle school english class you clearly learned multi syllable words that start with I try looking up what it means to figure out that you used it wrong. By any case thats to be expected, the bottom line BMW continues to gain market share and stay ahead of VWs deluxe division. While Audi dreams of sales that are on par with the 7 series from the A8. Why waste my breath based on the rediculous bias, and misuse of words I'm assuming its 00R with a different name for posting. Have fun but I suggest working on the fact you know nothing about cars and yet your allowed to post articles that are middle school paper skill level at best.

bmwdrvr - so far, you've managed to prove the following:
1. You don't know how to spell.
2. You don't know much about cars beyond BMW.
3. You certainly don't know much about statistics because you keep confusing market share change for sales volume.
4. Your obvious blind love for BMW makes you one of the least credible people on Autospies.

nice job on delivering lots of great product, bmw. 5-series and X5 continue to do well....both top-notch cars in their respective categories. and, WOW, the X3 did well despite being available only 2 weeks of the month (that bodes VERY well for next month).

sports: you're quite clueless as usual. the new X3 has gone upmarket (with similar dimensions to the first X5) in scale, performance and price. it just came on the market in mid-january.

internationalmanofmystery : I wish you were right but I doubt it. Main issue of BMW now is Horrible designs. The only nice car right now is the 5 series, and most of the others, i.e: 7, X6, 5GT, X3, and 1 are ugly and expensive cars. In the other hand MB are too expensive but still it was able to sale more cars than BMW did starting this year. I hope they go back to the drawing table. I want to see the new 6 series in person, in pictures it looks bland and before i though the E was a ladies car but seems to me that the crown goes to new 6 series. Then need to return to their real roots. Sport cars, cause attempting to take the lead in luxury from MB is destroying them, They are not Up to MB in Luxury and now they are lossing groung as Sport leaders cause MB is copping them in several aspects with success, the only defect of MB is the price but cause they are sold as Luxury cars, most of the people Is willing to pay for them what most are not willing to pay for a Bimmer.

have you ever driven a BMW? particularly a new one? DESIGN is a big part of what makes the cars great. most models are tasteful, well-proportioned and clearly stand out as BMWs. and the interiors are gorgeous. this explains why people will pay significant premiums for a 3-series over an A4 or C-class or for a 5-series over an E-class or A6.
