Mini will launch the Cooper SD this spring. The most powerful diesel model in its line-up to date, the Cooper SD made its public debut at the Geneva motor show. This engine features a 2.0-litre, common-rail turbodiesel powerplant, which delivers 141bhp and a 225lb ft between 1750rpm and 2700rpm. As I understand it, the EPA is the reason (not coincidence) that virtually every diesel that hits the US is 140hp. Too costly to get each one certified, so they end up sharing them.

I've driven an Audi A3 and Golf diesel with this engine and wanted to like them but can't. It's about 30 or 40hp short of my fundamental car guy rights for highway power. Might be a good base on a hybrid though...if this combo ever gets done.
