Audi wins 'Sportiest cars of 2006' in German magazine

The readers of the German car magazine “sport auto” have made their decision: Audi has taken first place in four classes in the poll to find “the sportiest cars of 2006” with the A3 2.0 TDI, the A8 TDI quattro, the RS 4 and the S8. The victory of the Audi RS 4 in its first appearance in the poll was particularly notable. It amassed a total of 41.7 % of reader votes and left more powerful German competitors – among others – trailing in its wake.

With these four victories, the cars bearing the four-ring badge are not only representing the best-placed German premium brand on the market. It is also the case that Audi is the most successful brand of all in this year’s readers’ poll.

And the Audi brand group achieved yet another triumph: the Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder took victory by a considerable margin in the class of convertibles and roadsters costing 90,000 euros or more.

The awards ceremony took place on Saturday 3 June 2006 at the sport auto promotion day at the Hockenheimring.

I guess you think German readers/drivers don't know anything about sporty driving. Don't they have some sort of a highway system where you can go really fast.

I'm new to Autospies and admittedly and Audi fan. This doesn’t mean I will not switch brands in the future. However, this news is good for all German car lovers. It forces BMW and MB to keep progressing and developing great products. That, in turn, forces Audi to do the same. See the pattern? As long as these three keep competing with each other we as consumers win.

Please, let's stop using the RS badge to justify Audi's performance credentials. Yes, the RS4 is a piece of art, but RS cars are fantasy cars for all but a few. To be considered a true "sport auto" beyond a few thousand car mag readers, Audi needs to provide the guts and thrills for the $35-40K buyer. That's the A3/A4 basically. And I'll get hammered for saying this in here, but the A3/A4 are beautiful versatile cars, but guts and thrills? Not so much.

Why not--RS is very valid---that is liek saying the M badge has nothing to do with BMW. Oh You forgot the RS6.

RS4 is about $66K, no? What would an RS5, 6 or 8 go for? That's astronomical money. Don't buy into the halo garbage. If you can't afford the car, what good is this RS line to you? Just good for building credentials on car site bulletin boards.

I've driven the A3 and it's more fun than the A4. But the issues of FWD, the weight distribution... I'm not taking BMW even. The old Lexus IS300 was an awesome driver's car. You get going and it just responds. Audi is a colder, more intellectual sports car. Even Audi recognizes this. Their newer designs are striving for a more RWD feel with Quattro and a better weight distribution. So, don't shoot the messenger here. Audi knows it has improvements to make to be taken seriously as a driver's car. If the RS line helps Audi with performance that makes it to the real (i.e. affordable) cars, then great. But I'm not going to buy an A3 because Audi makes an RS4.

Just got back from the weekend, and in the mail box was the July issue of Automobile Magazine. They tested the M5, S6, and E63 AMG.

The winner was the E63 AMG, Second was the S6 (wonder how a RS6 would do?), the M5 was relegated to third.

Basically the market is moving so fast the the top dog can be regulated to last place in 2 or 3 years.

I like Audi a lot.
I like BMW a lot.

Neither are as good as Porsche by any measure of "sportiness", and all pale in comparison to some of the hardware from Ferrari.

This is just another stupid popularity poll, taken by random people who haven't necessarily driven each vehicle. (Assuming they are old enough to legally drive).
