MORE Auto Workers Busted For Lunchtime Drugs - Is It Time For The UAW To Clean Up The Membership?

Three workers from Chrysler Group LLC's Jefferson North plant were arrested recently for alleged drug use during their lunch break after police were tipped off by the automaker.

The workers were arrested on Jan. 24 but have not been formally charged, said Det. Lt. Robert Honey, of the Michigan State Police's County of Macomb Enforcement Team.

The arrests mark the second publicized instance of apparent drug use at the Detroit assembly plant in six months. Last fall, FOX 2 TV captured video of workers from the same plant drinking and smoking what appeared to be drugs during their lunch break. Chrysler fired 13 workers as a result of that incident.

It is time for the UAW to disband let the free markets determine wages.

Free markets determine wages? What a dumb idea. You mean the 18 cents an hour that US corporations are paying workers oversees? Free markets means that Corporations will send the labor there. All while enjoying U.S tax breaks. Rebulican much?

"It is time for the UAW to disband let the free markets determine wages."

A novel ideal.......

if this was 1930.

Further more a handful of bad people don't represent the hundreds of thousands of hard working people supporting their families.
That would be like saying ALL Americans are fat but we all know the truth about that one.

Union workers not taking the jobs seriously? That's amazing. It's got to be a rare occasion when that happens. Really rare.

Really really rare.

Oh wait - it's not.

UAW stands for "United Auto Workers", but it should be EAW - "entitled auto workers".

What if Chrysler, Ford, and GM just fired every worker and then let them re-apply for their own jobs? I bet that would solve a lot of problems.

I agree. You'd think that as much as the UAW workers get paid they'd at least show their appreciation by building some decent cars.

Well if you promise the best workforce in the world. Then you need to make sure you live up to the reputation with the best employees.

True 009 but drugs are not just used by UAW members, the entire USA has a drug problem. The United States war drugs is an uphill battle, don't try to just say it's one group of people or corporation when in reality it's more widespread.

That is correct but does the UAW have a zero tolerance initiative? Right now it seems they blindly stand behind the union member. They can do so because they have no liability unlike the automaker.

"...tipped off by the automaker."

It's nice when a company cares. We love you, man!!

Again the only one that can be held liable for a defective car is the automaker. Not the high worker.

Because no one in the US did drugs till Obama took office? i'll give you a plus 1 as your comment has nothing to do with anything...and therefore is exactly what we're looking for on Autospies.

Good. Nail them to the wall. We didnt bail out this company just so the union can keep doing what its doing, with the employees being untouchables hiding behind the UAW badge. Welcome to the non-Unionized real world. We don't get baked during our lunch break.

I find it laudable that the Company self regulated this issue and picked out the bad apples that are spoiling our investment. It shows they actually took action after last falls undercover report.

I just cant believe these morons got caught at the same plant.

UAWlax, paying employees wages and benefits that are appropriate to their skill sets and educations is a "novel" idea? Why do you think so many foreign companies are building and exanding their plants in right to work states in the South? Automotive manufacturing jobs will never return to Michigan or other northen, union run states. The UAW priced themselves out of the labor market with their demands for unsustainable pensions, salaries, and other benefits. As a result, those jobs have left.

Well said. If the UAW was so efficient and wonderful, why can't they unionize any of the transplant factories?

Answer: UAW doesn't work. At least not in it's current form.

Unions should go the way of the dinosaurs that they are. Once upon a time unions were necessary (even though almost always corrupt). But now the federal government with the Dep't of Labor, OSHA, etc. insures fair pay, safe work environments, fair benefits and a myriad of regulations to insure the well-being of the American worker--and all of it without greed and corruption (however they need to work on efficiency).
Outlaw all unions!

This is why unions need to go: http://www.heritage.org/static/reportimages/95CFB030977DAD5D332E566EC7B976F6.gif

$70/hour to put a screw in a door? All you union guys need to get you head out of your A$$es. Or at least closer to daylight.

Here we go again. UAW members puffing it up. Wait - they're organizing in the parking lot because they didn't get their pot dispensing vending machines in walking distance of the cafeteria. The sad thing about this again, Chrysler is spending mega money on advertisment to tell us all they've improved their quality. Keep puffing if you want us all to believe that.

As you said 56 "here we go again". This has been going on for years. The fact that Chrysler themselves exposed these employees says to me they are improveing quality. Expose them and make a example. The UAW needs to take responsibility for there members actions. Kudos to Chrysler!

I can't wait until the execs get caught smoking up,lol In Canada the police wouldn't even show up, the operator would be pissed off if they ever got a call like this, There should be mandatory drug tests for everyone, the work force would be so much better and the quality of work would improve, these guys are in need of some positive direction, the uaw is the last of the middle class, these deadbeats don't represent all of them, this will also send a message to the UAW, now these guys will lose there homes and healthcare, divorce... did they need that joint that bad?

And people wonder why our cars are shittier than any other car company. I have been to the GM plant when I was a heavy equipment mechanic and things I have seen would make you never ever consider a GM product. Face it, no matter how good our sdesigns are, our workers suck and don't care. If UAW upped their standards, our cars would be better. Pay them more so they can buy more dope.

This is a very easy problem to address. Since the government owns GM and Chrysler, require all of these "government employees" to take random drug tests, just as all the military and civilian employees of the government are required to do. Fire anyone who tests positive, on the spot. Let the union scream and cry, and go to court..that is what we have government lawyers for.
