AutoSpies.com Chooses The 2011 Car Of The Year-Bet You Can't Guess!
Yesterday we found out who was the champion of the world in football so AutoSpies.com thought it would be fitting to announce our choice for Car Of The Year today.

As you know, we are the number one automotive social media site with a focus on the premium market.

But every once in a while a great car comes along that deserves our praise even though it doesn't compete in the markets our community is usually most interested in.

This year's car of the year is special for a number of reasons.

1. It's groundbreaking in the segment
2. It changes the paradigm in its segment
3. It offers best of breed capabilities that the competitors can't touch.
4. And this year, because it's price is almost too good to be true

So with no further ado, this years winner is....

The 2011 Hyundai Elantra.

Hybrid like mileage (40 mpg hwy), gorgeous styling not even known in the compact category until now, acres of interior room with gorgeous fit and finish and a starting price of $14,830 makes this the first 'Premium' compact car for the masses.

Congratulations Hyundai on a job well done!

Official press release:

ALL-NEW HYUNDAI ELANTRA NAMED 2011 AUTOSPIES.COM CAR OF THE YEAR

SAN DIEGO, CA. February 7, 2011... The all-new 2011 Hyundai Elantra was named today by AutoSpies.com—the world’s leading automotive social media site—as the 2011 AutoSpies.com Car of the Year.

In the eyes of AutoSpies.com editors, the new Elantra sends everyone in the segment back to the drawing board because of its elegant and sporty styling, total value equation, and wonderful execution.

“Hyundai has single-handedly changed the compact car segment by creating the first “premium” compact that is affordable to the masses,” said Donald Buffamanti, Founder of AutoSpies.com

Starting at a price of $14,830 with class-leading interior volume and an Environmental Protection Agency rated MPG of 29/40 city/highway, the 2011 Elantra is a well-rounded compact car that bests the rest.

"Elantra is pushing the compact category to offer innovation, content and style -- characteristics often missing from the competition," said John Krafcik, president and CEO, Hyundai Motor America. "Car enthusiasts like AutoSpies.com recognize that standard 40 miles-per-gallon fuel economy, tremendous luxury and convenience features, and modern design should be
expectations even at an accessible price point."

i thought you guys were going to pick the equus. it would have surprised me if you guys didn't pick a hyundai. not sure if you hadn't noticed, but take it from a long time visitor of your site - your bias towards hyundai is extremely obvious.

i'm from south korea, and that car (known as the avante here) got slammed for being dangerously unstable at speed. it even lost out on most comparos to the daewoo lacetti (aka: chevy cruze) in its own hometown auto-journals. it's great that you guys chose it as your car of the year!

Hmm you obviously you haven't sat in one, much less driven a Hyundai or Kia lately.

I have a buddy who is (was) a hard core Lexus fan. At my suggestion he did walked into a Kia dealer to look at the Sorento for his niece. He was so impressed he went to a Hyundai dealer later in the week and looked at the Genesis coupe.

He is now Lexus-less as his IS350 was traded for the coupe.

All you have to do to believe is go drive one.

BTW: His Lexus was only in the shop once for a rattle, but it was recalled 5 times in the last 2 years. That pushed him to look elsewhere.

I don't know guys, it's good looking and that's for sure but 40 mpg is pretty much the norm for this segment now and Hyundai reliability seams better than it's previous years but it is still unknown today.

for the money, that is a spectacular car! distinctive exterior design, tasteful interior, and wow what a jump in overall quality.

toyota and honda have A LOT to worry about. can't imagine why someone would buy a corolla or civic over this!

Maybe because those are proven cars in this segment.

the deboosting--without any substantive reply--shows just how nervous all the blindly loyal toyota fans are....

this is a GREAT car for the money. would not be embarrassed to be seen in this econo car.

"proven"

corolla is proven to be boring looking.
proven to be of average reliability at best.
proved to to have generic design that stays the same for years.

yes, proven.

only to a blind toyota fanboy who hates everyone who competes with toyota. bmw, audi, hyundai, maserati, range rover, etc. etc. all make a number of original, wonderful cars in their respective segments. toyota makes benign automotive appliances--that are just tarted up in lexus form.

Think that the Kia Optima is the better choice for COTY -- ups the ante in the segment. For Elantra I think the Focus will be a better vehicle in that segment. Hey my 2 cents...

Strip away the cartoonish body design and all you're left with are the mechanicals of an economy car. Nothing premium about that.

i don't think you would recognize innovative/interesting/good design if it ran you over. this from a man who thinks a corolla is good design. please....

Must admit that I saw one driving up 3rd Ave in Midtown NY and looked twice. Didn't realize the interior was that much nicer than others in that category.

With 40MPG, good looks and a $15k price tag its not a bad buy. As for the engine noise someone else mentioned - its a 4 banger for $15k, what do you expect the purr of a Ferrari? Redline a Corolla and tell me what you hear!

Just about every pro-Hyundai comment gets de-boosted around here and you guys chose a Hyundai, like starting fires I see, LOL. I'd actually wouldn't mind hearing some comments from you guys on why you chose it aside from the this press release. I'm not gonna pick on Hyundai and say your being paid under the table for this pick, I agree that the Elantra raised the stakes for the segment, they did an great job on it. BUT... in my own personal opinion I think there were other cars a little more deserving.

Nice car, went to try it out at the local Hyundai dealer, cushy ride, too bad they are pretty friggin expensive for Hyundais, I wonder how many people are willing to make the jump to an expensive Hyundai

This is a good choice. I am not ready to buy a Hyundai yet, but the fact is, this car "changes everything" for the segment.
Naysayers are loyal to another brand and are sounding pretty ignorant in their disagreement.
What Hyundai has done is raised the bar enough to make the next couple years tough for competitors. This will mean lower prices and better product for us all.

Look, I have never driven on even sat inside one of these Elantra things so my comment is purely based on internet picture viewings.

That said i have to admit that the Exterior of the vehicle is not the typical boring econocar design and that is surely a good thing.

The interior is also surprisingly well appointed and pleasing to the eye and again not what i am used to seeing in an econocar.

No Clue on drivetrain as i have never driven it but 40mpg highway sounds very good for a non diesel vehicle.

The most important bit for me in this whole article is the price: <$15,000 is as far as i am concerned a fantastic price for all that vehicle. In the UK that amounts to approx £10,000 and all you will get for that price over here is maybe a base level Nissan Micra, for those of you who do not know what a micra is here is a link:

http://www.nissan.co.uk/?cid=psmicraUK_enK12locukgg&kw=test_b_nissan_micra&#vehicles/city-cars/micra

So as far as i am concerned, if Hyundai were to bring this vehicle to the UK at that price level, even without a diesel engine, it will sell like hot cakes.
{ I know about vehicle price comparisons so don't bother to try and preach to me. I am just talking Hard Earned Cash}

I agree with this pick for Autospies 2011 COTY. I would have picked this or the Sonata. I would have said Fiesta but its overpriced (IMO). Cruze exterior design looks about ten years old and is an upset (IMO).
