Your Tax Dollars At Work? GM Set To Pay Hourly Workers Largest Bonuses In History Of Company

General Motors Co.'s hourly workers can expect some of the largest profit-sharing checks ever, when the automaker pays bonuses for the money earned in 2010, a top union official said Monday.

United Auto Workers' Vice President Joe Ashton, who oversees the union's labor relations with GM, said the bonuses are likely to top the average $1,775 workers got for 1999, the company's biggest payout to date.

And then people wonder why Fiat's CEO wants to GTFO of Italy, it's simple, unions are supposed to be a partner, UAW is not a partner and GM ... I'm sorry to say this, is no car company

I will never buy or lease a GM as long as they are forced to use the UAW.

Would you consider a German car made by Union workers in Germany?

This isn't a big bonus, lets hope the tax payers were payed off first, why is everyone so against the union? We all quickly forget the millions the executives got, I would be happier to see the workers get the same bonus as the execs based on profits because they all worked as a team. They are the last of the middle class, the corporations are taking over everywhere.

I don't advocate drugs at all, and when I suggested the workers get the same bonuses as the execs I was suggesting that they only get bonuses based on the profit, not millions, the execs should get the same bonuses as the workers, or at least close, no more than double. For any company to win everyone has to win.

I don't think GM has the self-control to re-invest as the money comes in. New product is still lacking, and the Asians will continue to eat their lunch.
This recent success will be short lived.

I am glad we saved the auto industry. It is one of the last vestiges of large scale manufacturing we have in the US. Large scale manufacturing that our engineers design, our people build and are sold world wide. Would have been sad to see the US lose this capability. Agree on the fact they should be divesting themselves of any govt ownership (I believe after the IPO we still own around 30% of GM. Still as long as there are roughly $2k worth of health care costs in every car we make it will continue to put the US made cars at a disadvantage.. even though the floor persons wages are slightly lower than their German counterparts and slightly higher than the non-unionized workers at the Japanese/Korean plants. As for smoking pot during lunch....fire em! I am sure there are a lot of companies that have this problem and I doubt it is unique to GM.

Well said! And as far as the health care costs, it is wonderful how costs are absorbed when you make a product people want to buy. Apple sells millions of products.

Nice that you are making a turnaround GM, but now?? Really?? It seems a bit....wait, what is the word I am looking for here?.....Insensitive! Yeah, that's the one!!!

Everything Apple sells is made in China!

But agree with the fundamental premise...they must have a good product that people want to buy. That is why Apple sells a zillion Macs even though they cost a premium compared to PCs with similar specs.

Apple's quality has been compromised since they started making them in China, the older Macs are more reliable, that is directly from a Mac expert that repairs them, now they are no better quality than a PC other than being less prone to viruses.
