The TRUTH About The Mazda MX-5, Is Chris Harris RIGHT or WRONG?

The TRUTH About The Mazda MX-5, Is Chris Harris RIGHT or WRONG?
If you haven't been keeping an eye on the automotive world recently, EVO Magazine's Chris Harris pretty much went out and called out one of Mazda's greatest achievements, the MX-5 a.k.a. Miata.

You don't sell 900,000 units if it's garbage, right? Well, Harris thinks otherwise since he directly compared it to fecal matter.

But coming to the MX-5's defense is The Truth About Cars, which presents an interesting argument against Harris. In fact, it is so good I won't even bother attempting to summarize it.

In the rarefied world of auto journalism, EVO magazine has assumed a place at the top of the food chain, for its derring-do tales of “flat out motoring”, performance car snobbery of the highest order and rich douchebag “contributors” whose only qualification is owning an absurdly expensive car that masquerades as a “long term tester”.

Like foodies, hipsters and other urban vermin, the EVO crew clearly gets off on the elitism of motoring rather than the appreciation of an automobile or the joy of driving. Figures then, that Chris Harris, supposedly a thinking man’s Jeremy Clarkson, criticized the Mazda MX-5 as being “shit”. According to Harris, the Mazda is “slow, precise and unsatisfying”. On what planet.....

Owned 2 Miata's and loved them as much or more than other high powered cars I've owned...every trip in one is fun, great melding of man and machine, going 40 feels like your going 80, don't have to drive it over
100mph to feel like your a driving superstar, park it anywhere and not worry about it, never broken or out of service, etc etc. Great car.

Chris Harris of "Evo" and "Autocar" were the only 2 publications that have ever spoken negatively of a Miata. Autocar complained prior to the 2010 revamp of the suspension and styling that the Miata did not handle as well as the original one (Versions 1,2,and 3 from 1990 to 2005).However the 2010 revamp cured the new Miata's handling ills according to Autocar. Every other publication that I know of has spoken high praise for the Miata. I read "Evo" a fair amount. Most of the cars that they are impressed with are high cost super cars. However they do have high praise for the Renault Megane Sport and the low powered, lower cost Lotus Elise(not available in the US). I think you have to sometimes take a journalists point of view with a grain of salt.I can imagine what Chris Harris might think of a Mustang or Camaro.Probably not much. He is entitled to his opinion.

This is why Chris hates it, he can't drive, he doesn't even shift gears properly without grinding them in fully manual cars.

"Harris's racing career in a nutshell: 'I won my first race in 2000 in a Formula Palmer Audi single seater race. Raced everything from Formula Ford (I reached the final of the famous Formula Ford Festival in 2008, but got destroyed by all the young kids in the final!) through Lotus Exiges to ASCAR (oval racing), to saloon cars. Also entered a world rally event, Wales Rally GB, in a Fiesta ST group N and came 1st in class.'

And his Nurburgring history?

1999 - First visit to Nordschleife
2001 - 24hrs in Motorcycle engined Caterham. Blew up in qualifying!
2002 - 24hrs in Factory Caterham R400, finish 11th Overall, 1st in class
2004 - 24hrs in Renault Clio, DNF
2007 - 24hrs in Porsche 997 GT3 Cup, DNF"

Have you seen his performance reviews? He can't launch worth anything he always burns out too much, and if the car can't shift for him he'll skip gears or grind them.
