Audi tops BMW in January sales race

Audi global sales rose 22.6 percent to 95,400 cars in January, making the month its best January on record due to "significant double-digit growth in all regions," the company said. The luxury carmaker beat rival BMW AG's namesake brand, which sold 90,841 units, a rise of 30% on January sales in 2010.

Audi said on Tuesday sales in Germany were up 14.8 percent in January 2011 compared with the year-earlier period, largely thanks to strong sales of the new Audi A1 model and continuing strong demand from corporate customers.

The luxury auto maker continued to see positive growth in both China and the U.S. Sales in China were up 32.1 percent year-on-year in January, while sales in the United States climbed 20 percent compared with the year-earlier period.

... and so the beginning of the end (for BMW) begins.

You're nuts. Even if Audi has a larger market share BMW is not going the way of Plymouth...Audi has good product and so does BMW...They will continue to coexist.

But Audi takes its due credit for a fantastic line up..and the competition between the two only serves to bring better products to us!

If we extrapolate using the data of this one-month trend, Audi will overtake BMW in a mere matter of months (that's sarcasm, boys... settle down).

Now I like Audi. I'm sorta sweet on their A5, and I love their R8 (if only they'd depart from their Gaping Hole grills), but let's put this in perspective: Audi's annual sales are about half of BMW's. It may take quite a while, if ever, for Audi to beat BMW's annual unit sales numbers.

@steve. One assumes in terms of annual sales you are talking about the US Market and not the global market? Otherwise, your statement regarding 1/2 annual sales is not true. Audi AG predicts global sales to exceed 1.2 million units for 2011 if Audi AG can keep up with demand. BMW AG for its entire group (BMW, Mini, and Rolls Royce) predicts global sales for 2011 around 1.4 million sales. Audi AG is growing overall at a faster pace than BMW AG including at a higher % in the US as well. That is just the numbers, no bias. Furthermore, not sure what "bargain" cars the hater is talking about. Both companies have level entry luxury vehicles such as the A3 and 1-Series which do not cost "basement" prices. Same goes for the A4 and 3-Series. BMW uses the Mini as its A1 version, so that argument is mute regarding "basement priced vehicles." Actually, that is a somewhat moronic and uneducated response. And even with Mini added to the mix, BMW Group moved about 105,000 units in January, not that much more than Audi's 96,000. Audi does not include Lambo units sold in its numbers, though small, Lambo does afterall belong to Audi.

Audi is finally getting it. They have some great products. When I was selling them in the mid-80's to early 90's they were underpowered pieces of junk.

vinman1013vinman1013 - 2/9/2011 12:19:20 PM

Now they are overpriced and under powered good looking cars..Proves that performance isn't everything! NOT!!

I call bullshit on Audi for the mere fact that the R8 is a Lambo and the entry level hogs they are selling don't compare to BMW...BMW has lost its way also...So I'm not just railing on Audi...BMW needs to get its head out its ass and focus on styling...They have the performance down to a science...Audi is winning in looks and finish!

Both brands sucks when it comes to thier bread-and-butter (entry level cars). Audi much worse than BMW. Audi and BMW are overpriced cars that dont even last any longer than cars that costs $10,000+ less.

oh yes lex....that's why the average buyer of a 3-series is 40, male and makes $100k+. smart.

I see as many (perhaps more) Females than I do Males driving the 3-series.

As far as the average buyer is concerned? Where did you get those numbers from? I'd bet that you just made them up.

In the 80s and early 1990s, the Euro car to own was Mercedes. In the mid 1990s it was BMW, now it's Audi.

Looks like a trend to me. And I am generalizing here. All these brands make great products but with more younger people on the market today I think the appeal is in favor of Audi and BMW. Mercedes is coming back strong, though, with youth-oriented cars like the SLK and even, dare I say it, the new CLS and E class. My German is barely passable but there was a report on a German website about how in Europe most people shopping for a 5er, E class or A6 are in the mid 30s and early 40s range - and that's still "young".

Just kidding..I'll take the M3 over the RS4 anyday..
One month is not enough to draw any conclusions..I feel BMW is more likely to finish on top this year. The loser this year may be Mercedes stuck at 1.1 Million in sales for 10 years straight.
Most Effeminate Retards Can Enjoy Driving Expensive Shitboxes!.

This may be the year Audi says Sayonara to Mercedes. Goodbye 20th century Luxury, welcome 21st century Luxury. Who will be the 22nd century king..Hyundai? Good thing I'll be dead by then..
