Ford Rivaling BMW For Weight Loss In Products
Six months after arriving at Ford Motor Co. from Boeing Co. in 2006, Alan Mulally had to decide the fate of the Explorer, once America's top-selling sport utility vehicle.

Ford had just posted a $12.6 billion annual loss, and investors were clamoring for the new CEO to replace such guzzlers as the Explorer with the gas-sipping models that buyers wanted.

No offence intended or implied, BlackDynamite, but my understanding is that Audi's AWD cars are actually heavier than BMW's RWD cars. The reason I make that comparison is if I'm a driver who isn't looking for AWD, then BMW presents the lighter car, though Audi has the additional "feature" (and weight) of included Quattro AWD. So in *my* mind, Audi hasn't quite been able to make the claim that their cars are a lot lighter than other's. They have, however, boasted about how much weight they are shaving off compared to previous models, but even that isn't an eye-brow raising 400 lbs. It's a much smaller "incremental" figure.

Note that I am not claiming weight reducing advancements aren't being made in some places. I'm just saying that over-all, it doesn't merit the hype it's been getting.
