GENEVA MOTOR SHOW PREVIEW: Has Bertone Helped Jaguar Find Its Identity?
As we gear up for the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, we're beginning to get leaks of information about what to expect at one of the largest auto events for the year.

And one of the latest bits of information comes from Jaguar, who has been looking to define its identity. For example, with the new XF and XJ, it seems the brand is attempting to locate its "new look" with a revamped take on technology and tradition.

With the new XJ it has become a polarizing design right down to the black-painted C-pillar trim. Although that's not necessarily a negative point, it just seems that Jaguar has lost the essence of what makes a Jaguar... a Jaguar.

Taking that into consideration, is Bertone's stab at it with the B99 a better vision of the marque going forward?

It’s a double whammy for Jaguar, with the debut of a stunning new compact saloon concept hinting at a future design direction and a replacement for the X-Type.

The deep red machine has been created by famed Italian styling house Bertone – but only after being briefed by Jaguar’s creative chief Ian Callum and advanced design boss Julian Thomson.

The result is called the B99, a name which draws together Bertone and the years since the company was first launched...

The profile is good but the car as a whole just looks strange

Nice to see smooth lines in a car concept again. Only issue is the cartoon size wheels.

WHOA! Not that the current cars are bad, but WOW! If the next-generation of Jags are like this rather than an evolution of the current lineup, then Jaguar is on a roll!

Very Bentley like in stature and definitely more of a return to classic Jag looks.

The question is- will it sell?????

If it can deliver similar looks and the ride as well I'd have to say yes....

As undeniably gorgeous as this is, if Jaguar had released something like this they would have quickly been accused of producing yet another 'old fashioned' looking Jaguar, because it looks so much like just a modernized version of their previous designs.

it's a good looking vehicle but it's definitely a "form over function" design. You'd never guess it by looking at the picture because of how long the hood and trunk are, but the designer says that vehicle is shorter than a 3-Series in both length and height. The only way you can have that long of a hood and trunk while keeping the overall length shorter than a 3-Series is by making the cabin smaller. Take a look at a photo of a 3-Series sedan and look at the ratio of cabin length to overall length. Now look at the picture above and do the same thing. The ratio of cabin length to overall length is about half of what it is on the 3-Series, AND this is a smaller car. It's not like the 3-Series is a cavernous vehicle inside, now imagine one with half the interior space. It does look cool though.

@JRobUSC,

So true. Until I read the article, I saw it as a luxury sedan class vehicle (7 Series, A8, S-Class). A 3-Series class vehicle with that long a hood and trunk must be horribly-cramped in the cabin.

The answer to that question is no. Its nice, but as I said before it is a step backwards.

Step backwards maybe but an updated iteration nonetheless. Its got the classic smooth lines a Jaguar is known for and its not as "retro" as the S-Type. Maybe it should be more into the XF-ish look but in a GT body style like the one in the picture.

That's an amazing concept. If this is real, it makes Jaguar relevant again! With the bland generic designs of the Germans and the Japanese of late, this would definitely bring people into showrooms!

This is the type of design Acura needs!

It's beautiful but it harks back to the previous old design. Further it did not sell. So frankly this will end up being a one off. you have to figure that interior space in this thing is going to be tiny. Would never sell in the US. The next 3 series competator is going be a smaller version of the XF and XK.One thing Jaguar has to make note of.No matter how small this new car is it better have resonable rear leg and headroom. The last X type had about the same rear leg room as my Mini CooperS does. That is apalling in a so called luxury car.
