Toyota Recalls 2.14 Million Vehicles For Pedal Entrapment Issues

Toyota Recalls 2.14 Million Vehicles For Pedal Entrapment Issues
Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today announced that it will conduct a voluntary safety recall of approximately 20,000 2006 and early 2007 Model Year GS 300 and GS 350 All-Wheel Drive vehicles to modify the shape of the plastic pad embedded in the driver's side floor carpet. In the event that the floor carpet around the accelerator pedal is not properly replaced in the correct position after a service operation, there is a possibility that the plastic pad embedded into the floor carpet may interfere with the operation of the accelerator pedal. If this occurs, the accelerator pedal may become temporarily stuck in a partially depressed position rather than returning to the idle position.

Owners of the involved GS 300 and GS 350 All-Wheel Drive vehicles will receive a notification by first class mail beginning in early March 2011.

Toyota will also voluntarily recall approximately 372,000 2004 through 2006 and early 2007 RX 330, RX 350, and RX 400h vehicles, and approximately 397,000 2004 through 2006 Highlander and Highlander HV vehicles to replace the driver's side floor carpet cover and its two retention clips. If the forward retention clip used to secure the floor carpet cover, which is located in front of the center console, is not installed properly, the cover may lean toward the accelerator pedal and interfere with the accelerator pedal arm. If this occurs, the accelerator pedal may become temporarily stuck in a partially depressed position rather than returning to the idle position.

Owners of the involved RX and Highlander vehicles will receive an interim notification by first class mail beginning in the near future, explaining how to inspect for this condition or that they may contact their local dealer to perform the inspection.

Owners will receive a second notification once the replacement covers are available.
Separately, Toyota has amended its recall from November 2009, adding three models to address the potential for unsecured or incompatible floor mat entrapment of the accelerator pedal. The models added include:

Approximately 603,000 2003 through 2009 4Runner
Approximately 17,000 2008 through 2011 Lexus LX 570; and
Approximately 761,000 2006 through 2010 RAV4

Owners of the involved 4Runner, LX 570, and RAV4 vehicles will receive an interim notification by first class mail beginning in the near future, informing them of the condition. Owners will receive a second notification once the recall preparations are complete.

Toyota and Lexus dealers will implement the newly announced and amended recall remedies at no charge to the vehicle owners.

Oooh, I can just hear it now... listen carefully... "See! See! Toyota *WAS* responsible for those run-away cars. See! See!" <Sigh>

What did they fix if it wasn't broken then?

No reply Steve? He asked a question.

Joe_Limon asks "What did they fix if it wasn't broken then?"

You're asking the wrong question in order to get to the conclusion you have already made. A much more pertinent question is: Where is the proof that a Toyota defect caused unintended acceleration? The answer to that question is: CSIs could not find any, nor could the NHTSA, and neither could NASA! In fcat, NOBODY could. Still, there are those who *believe*, in spite of an absolute lack of proof to support their belief.

I wouldn't say it's the wrong question, I think it's the correct question, you simply don't want to answer it because no matter which way you answer it you'll realize that Toyota is in the wrong. If you are correct and there is nothing wrong with their vehicles and they aren't fixing anything, they are slapping a half assed couple penny fix on these cars because it's the cheapest way to save face, and to get people off of their back for all of these run away vehicles. And if you're wrong, there is something wrong with these vehicles and this cheap fix actually saves a life or two, then well they were wrong and now they are paying the price for their design flaw.

Sorry, my friend, you're gonna HATE reading this. After a Federal witch-hunt and ongoing persecution of Toyota, all based on the *belief* that a defect exists, and that said defect caused the alleged unintended acceleration (nobody could proved that a defect exists, nor that the alleged defect actually caused run-away cars), Toyota has grown weary of being senselessly flogged. So they struck a deal with the Feds in which Toyota would give the *appearance* of doing something to address the "defect" (which can't be found by anyone), and the Feds would stop The Inquisition. And so you have have this "fix." Search Google, as well as this site, for more info about The Deal With The Devil (Feds).

So they are still fixing the cars even though there wasn't any proof? Where there is smoke, there is fire.

And what is Toyota doing when they receive the recalled vehicles in the service bays? Are they replacing the pedals with the same identical part, or are they replacing the pedal with a redesigned part. If the part was redesigned, then why was it redesigned? Either way, Toyota is looking like crap these days with all the recalls and all. Toyota is nothing that I would associate with quality.

Thank you lexsucks, apparently Steve finds it easier to believe in the Toyota is a victim to a mass government conspiracy story then Toyota is a company that is motivated by profits story.

A few years ago an old lady spilled hot coffee from Mcdonalds all over herself and sued. Mcdonalds had to "fix" the cups with a warning that the coffee was hot. This is the same thing. Toyota has to change the pedals so that if people put mats on top of mats or incorrect mats in the car they still can't be trapped. Toyota brand mats aren't getting stuck. It's people who to this day a year after the initial recall, still put incorrect mats in their cars.

Actually it appears they struck a deal with the Feds. If they issue this recall then they have pretty much stopped the investigation to other issues with sudden acceleration.

Maybe they need to have a global seminar on "how to install your floor mats CORRECTLY"

Okay once again ... let's see the exact quote from the '' Official source '' Mr. Strickland

"As a result of the agency's review, NHTSA asked Toyota to recall these additional vehicles, " Strickland said. "Now that the company has done so, our case is closed."

So after the review the NHTSA recommended Toyota fail proof their vehicles

Toyota is doing exactly that today

once again, Toyota failing to come through with the truth. If it is not lying about withholding evidence, or not reporting safety issues on time, it is this, trying to get away with recalling the least amount of vehicles. Their bottom line is always profits, NOT CONSUMER SAFETY, NOT THE ENVIRONMENT, NOT TECHNOLOGY. You have to be blind to believe all their advertising.

Then what was all that BS when they supposedly fixed a bunch of gas pedals at the dealers? What was that about?? Fucken liars!!!!

This whole story has one conclusion for me:

Toyota is just as vulnerable as anybody else.

But, and here is where I believe all the hate is coming from, they were once viewed as the almighty quality god, and they did actually ride on that wave for quite a long time (undeserved). So now, once there is a chance to hit them, everybody who doesn’t like them will go for it (me included).

So: Toyota´s quality is down the drain for the sake of … profit.

Looking at the picture , why did they ever make a gas pedal with that silly curve in it? I recently saw the pedal placement of a coworkers 2007 Tundra as he was exiting the vehicle and noticed that the pedel was mounted very close to the floor . No onder things get jammed under the pedal and cause runaway vehicles . Foor mats do move around as uou get in and out a vehicle repeatedly

Actually the floor mats do not move around if you put the correct mats in. They have clips that keep them from moving. They're recalling millions of cars to make them FOOLproof. Fools use incorrect floor mats...or put mats on top of mats.
