WHY Is This Jaguar With Only 3k Miles On A Lexus Dealer's Showroom Floor?
We're not entirely sure. Are you?

Here's the thing, we already know that the new Jaguar XJ has a polarizing design. But it's not like the buyer didn't see the car prior to buying it. The new XJ didn't come out just yesterday. And its interior is incredibly stunning in person. Everything looks very couture.

Could it have been a maintenance issue? I don't think so considering we haven't heard any complaints from new Jaguar owners about their XJs and repair issues. Have you?

What could the owner have possibly traded the XJ for? An LS?

We all know the Lexus LS is not the newest vehicle to the game and its interior isn't the most visually eye catching.

Spies, what's the deal? Anyone have any ideas? We want to know!

Not entirely uncommon for dealerships to highlight some of their premium used cars to get more people into the showroom.

The Infiniti of Columbus store has a 2001 Bentley Arnage on their showfloor. Though not in a central location where they put the new QX56 and M56, the stately Bentley is definitely interesting enough to get 2nd & 3rd looks from customers visiting the shop for routine service. Heck, I didn't pass up the chance to sit in all the Bentley seats. It sure smelled like money...

The Arnage was on sale for less than $50k with maybe 56k miles on the odo. If that dealer was selling it, it must be in very good condition.

Yeah this happens all the time when a hot new design hits the street a competitor will buy one and put it in the showroom to generate traffic. I have seen this about 1000 times, surprised the Autospies haven't.

Hmmm... Because someone bought it and then decided they'd rather have a Lexus?

It may have nothing to do with it being a Jag at all.......

What a concept.

Because the new XJ has a harsh suspension at low speeds. I have test driven several, in the hopes that maybe I just happened to get a bad example, and to compare the 19" with the 20" wheels and the different engines, and to double check that I didn't have the suspension setting accidentially set to "Sport." Regardless of wheel size or engine type or suspension setting, the XJ is just plain stiff legged at town speeds. On the freeway it is very composed--not so in town. It's stiffer than the German competition too (at least the Panamera and the 7 Series, which I have cross shopped).

The owner of a pre-2011 Jag will be disappointed. (I own a 2006 JX Super V8.) I have decided to delay purchasing a replacement in hopes that at the mid-cycle refresh Jaguar will include an optional softer suspension setting.

I see very few new XJs on the road in San Diego (my city). Any idea on how they are selling?

By the way, while I am in complaint mode, I will note that there is no rear quarter visibility. I have never tried to rely on a blind spot detection monitor, so I wonder what thay would be like. I know that can't be changed in a mid-cycle refresh. Still, I would put up with it in exchange for a more comfortable ride in town because the new XJ is just so attractive inside and out, and those engines just rip.

True. The new XJ's do not have that smoothness feel to it like the older models. Poor rear visibiltity, troubles with its electronic components e.g. touch screen, bluetooth and most of all a banging noise coming from the sun roof. Its a great looking car, interior and the sound system is outstanding.

@ nonofyobus and enthusiastx11: Hillarious!

OAN: The dealer simply could have picked this up from a dealer auction like some dealers do and considering the vehicle, its sitting indoors instead of out. Idk, just my 2cents.

yea, it may have been a repo or something. Or possibly a company car lease early termination. You never know. Or the owner could have decided that a lexus suited them better. Who knows. Who cares???????

Yup. Repo was exactly what first came to mind.

I wonder what the headline would be if a Lexus with 3k was in a Jaguar dealership? Are there any real stats on trade-ins and competitors?

Something tells me a stunt like that wouldn't exactly work out in Jaguar's favor.

The car is at Lexus of Escondido in SoCal.

It was not bought at an auction or for any other reasons than what I list below.

Story on the car from a salesman in the dealer is the 45-50 year old, medium-sized gent who bought it didn't like:

1: Front vision out of the windshield
2. Thought inside techie screens/interface was way to much for them and not 'Jaguaresque'
3. Did not like cocoon-like cabin. Said he felt way to confined and claustrophobic for inside a luxury car.

Someone had to have traded it in. I remember when I traded my Porsche for a Lexus (Yes, that is not a typo). The Porsche I traded in end up on the showroom floor just like the Jag.

Originally bought and then traded, for the Lexus, by someone with no taste.

The beautiful XJ serves to suck in customers who then leave with an ES.

XJ = good for Lexus's business!

The Jag is cool and "techie" and all but its giving me too much coffin/casket....The Lexus would be "illuminate" more even in Black...I would be depressed in the Jag..sry...

Because Lexus is better than Jaguar and any other brand for that matter. The Lexus LS460 is the best luxury car ever made.

TopGear February 2011 issue {214}
Long Term Vehicle Review: JAGUAR XJ
Arrived: August 2010 // Spec: 3.0D Short Wheel Base Portfolio // Price: £66,950 // Mileage 17,430 // Achieved MPG 37.4mpg.
Reviewer: Tom Ford

"So we finally admit defeat on our long term Jaguar XJ. After 4 months of constant niggles - and some more serious issues - it's time to call it a day on AK 10 ZZD, and what has been my most unreliable long-termer in 10 years. I absolutely love the styling, adore the interior, have been mightily impressed with the big jag's ability to be both a limo and be sprightly to drive. And it would be easy to say that i should run this car to the bitter end, but realistically if you had bought this £67k motor from a dealer, it would have probably ended up back on their forecourt some time ago.

It started badly, being delivered with a flat offside front tyre and a large screw in the rear nearside. The litany of crapness then progressed to floppy trim, a stereo option that couldn't handle certain frequencies, broken headlights, windscreen wipers that fell off at 70mph in a rainstorm and various flashes from the electronics. The last culminating in a total system meltdown - after switching the traction control off to allow a bit of wheelspin up a snowy lane, the traction control not only failed to re-engage, but seemed to cause a failure of the entire suite of electronic helpers. So we had a full screen of pretty lights and so many failure messages they were forced to constantly cycle on the digital dash. Emergency Brake Assist Not Available, Adaptive Dynamics Fault, Stability Control Not Available, ABS Fault - and while loosing these types of functions essentially makes the XJ the same sort of basic car that i learned to drive in, it's not the kind of thing that inspires confidence. As i say, if this really were my car, i'd be annoyed, to say the least. Then, as a final gasp, the dash reverted to the 'start-up' screen of a Jaguar Leaper, before winking out to a tiny white dot for 5 minutes. The car was running at the time, but my patience had already run out.

Jaguar is convinced that the issues are because TopGear has been given an 'early' XJ and the issues aren't representative of the model as a whole. I tend to think they might be right, simply because if all XJ's were this bad, we'd be hearing about it by now. So in the interest of fairness we're going to get another one and run it for another few months and see if it suffers any similar issues. Jag is providing us with a car off the production line, in silver, still with the 3.0 litre diesel that we love so much. It'll be a long-wheelbase version, in a similar 'portfolio' spec. In fact, by the time you read this, the car should have already arrived at the TopGear office.

Very simple. Someone just felt bad for buying and decided to trade it in with a Lexus!
