UAW Accuses Republicans Of Trying To Destroy the Middle Class
UAW President Bob King attacked Gov. Rick Snyder's 25% pay cut and termination of union dues for at least 16,500 home child care providers as taking away collective bargaining rights, asserting that it is akin to what Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker has tried to do for most public employees in that state."There is a very clear Republican agenda across America to destroy the middle class," King said.

The home child care providers take care of children of working parents participating in the Welfare-to-Work program. They certified the UAW as their union in 2006. Most received $1.85 an hour if they took care of children younger than than 2 1/2 years old, or $1.60 if they cared for children age 2 1/2 or older. Snyder's budget will cut that to $1.30.

We must remember that the UAW says a lot of things, most of which we can't take seriously. So why should this statement by any different? Many of us like to blame the current administration (this applies to any point in history) for our woes. It's just another way of saying "not my fault." Of course everyone *else* is responsible for our happiness and well-being. Right? Hmmmmm. That does sound like union thinking, doesn't it.

All you have to do is look at any Government Census covering pay and you will see that the Average Union employee in any sector makes by 2010 standards 45% more than the private sector employee with their benefits included. I would love to know how they call themselves Middle Class when they make double what any private sector employee makes. I guess we are all lower class and you must be in a Union now to be considered Middle Class. If you look at the percentage of Union versus Private Sector and you will see they only represent 10% of the total US work force. So how does 10% have so much voice over the 90% of us??

Yeah but the middle class can afford to give tax bonuses to the upper 2 percent of wage earners? And the middle class can also afford to provide tax subsidies for Oil-Companies that make billions a year in profits. That’s right, not only don’t the oil companies pay taxes, they end up getting billions in tax payer money, even though they don’t need it. But it’s the teachers and the unions that are destroying the middle class right?

The media (fox news) has got you tricked into believing that a teacher making less than $75k a year is a fat cat, while the rich, wall-street, tax payer bailed-out executives earn multi-million dollar bonuses and you don’t even question it? Without the unions we wouldn’t have a minimum wage, Employer provided healthcare, and tons of other stuff. Without the unions to protect workers the corporation would pay U.S workers 18cents an hour like they do oversees.

Fox news has destroyed your brain to where you are protecting corporations and don’t even realize it. They pit workers against workers by making it seem like the teachers are getting a free ride (they aren't). The real problem is the corporations.

Yea I hope they make a lot less. I always hope that on my fellow Americans. You should see the census data... those Union people all make more that $250k per year. I hope they get realistic and move to pay more in line with China so we can be competitive again. And I hope all of America get's that message whether it is those greedy Union workers or those greedy other workers who are not letting us compete with China and India. IT workers should be the next group of people we target. They should never ever make more than about $15-25k per year and their bosses should be down in the $30-40k range max... I can't stand those Union people making a good living... just pisses me off... and all they all do is smoke pot and drink all day. No other group of workers do that or has anyone that does that in their groups. While we are at it American companies need to stop providing health care that is a huge drag on our competitiveness. Let the workers pay for it out of pocket. I sure hope we can get this country more like China and other 3rd world countries soon because I just hate seeing people making a decent living and a country with strong middle class. We should have it where us upper class make up maybe 2% of the population and we have hoards of cheap labor to keep us in luxury. I am glad to see these people put in their place!!! GO GOP!!!!

Which union people are making $250k per year? Believe the Fox-News lies if you want to. Just dont expect anyone to take you seriously.

An IT worker should only make $15-25k a year? Are you crazy? IT workers should make the same money as a McDonalds janitor? Do you even realize how skilled someone has to be in order to be in IT? Wow!! you people are brain washed beyond belief and very, very ignorant. In your world the only folks that should be above the poverty line are CEOs. You guys are the turkeys at your own thanksgving and dont ever realize it.

I would like all of the people that are siding with the Unions to tell us why the 90% non-union (I..E.. The US Tax Payer) worker has to pay taxes that guarantee the Unions Pension and Benefit plans yet we (the 90%) have non say in how generous their plans can be. Or how they get 45% more than 90% of the working class and demand more yet the people of the US should not say anything and just pay??? I would love true intulectual debate on this, where the other side doesn't just yell and scream. How is it as well that back in the 80's when my father had a small independant trucking company and he need to feed his family of 5 kids did the United Steel Workers think it was okay to drag him from his truck and beat him to the point of hospitalization because he crossed their picket lines. How is this American and how can us 90% accept this and let it happen today??

Why aren't you saying anything about Oil companies getting Billions of Tax payer dollars? And CEO's of bailed-out banks getting Multi-Million dollar bonuses? Instead the GOP has you fighting against your own fellow workers. Divide and Conquer, which is what they want. Your fellow workers aren't the problem (union or not). Fox news seems to have plenty of people falling for the madness.

If the pensions were removed from the books completely states will still be struggling with their budgets. And the attitude that you and others have, will only serve to make rich people richer at the expense of Teachers, Policeman and yourself.

It’s amazing how people, who aren’t rich, can be manipulated into fighting against their own best interest, and instead for the best interests of billionaires. Unbelievable!!!

Anyone who pulled your father out of a truck and beat him should have been prosecuted to the full extent of the law and should be sent to jail a long long time. I have no sympathy for people like that Union or otherwise. However that is an individual or certain individuals taking that action which is totally inexcusable. and to say all Union people do this is unfair as it would be to say every Muslim is a terrorist or every right winger is going to destroy govt buildings. As for Unions making 45% more than 90% of Americans... that is rediculous on it's face! That means not only are they in the top 10% of all wage earners but in the top of that 10%!!! Those are baloney figures thrown around with no REAL facts to back them up. In most comparisons that are Apples to Apples they make fairly comparable salaries or even slightly less but do have good health and retirement benefits which most of us in the private sector have seen shrinking (often very unfairly IMHO). How to you control that? Via your elected officials. You expect them to get a good deal for the tax payer while being fair to the people doing the work. If I am not mistaken in Wis the Unions have accepted every wage and benefit concession that has been put forward the only sticking point is that they want to continue to be able to bargain for these items. Hope that is a fair discussion...

Nobody takes the UAW seriously anymore. Unions may have served well in the past, but now they've just gotten far too powerful and thuggish for their own good.

The UAW may not have a good argument as to the cause, but the reality is that the middle class is disappearing.

For whatever the reason, the U.S. is seeing an increase in the upper class and lower class, but a reduction in the "middle". Middle class jobs used to be industrial and factory jobs - classic blue collar working class - and most of that has been replaced by dirt cheap Chinese labor. If the middle class is defined by combined household wages between $50K and $80K for a family of 3, it's easy to see that this is a rapidly shrinking segment of society. There's lots of entry level jobs available and high end jobs as well, but the middle class sweet spot? State workers are certainly middle class, well they're downsizing. Teachers? Laid off left and right. I think we are in the cycle of capitalism where you are either near the top or your at the bottom, but you are not going to have a steady job in the middle.

Always amazes me how we seem to want someone to pay... to be worse off.. we just need to be at each others throats while someone is making off with the loot... misdirection, demonization... what better way to keep us all distracted. Down with Unions.. cut their pay 90% get them down with the rest of us...same with IT workers... and any other stupid overpaid middle class buffoon! Keeping us uncompetitive, making me pay more at the store or in taxes... I want China here and I want a US of China now!!!!!

Last comment I have on this. Yes Unions need to reform and work to keep up to date, be relevant and be part of the solution to our problems we face as a country. Every organization needs to do that. I think there should be changes in the Unions just as I think there should be changes in how CEO salaries are decided (maybe shareholders should have a say?) or how we compete with countries that manipulate their currencies to maintain a competitive advantage and so on. But to demonize one group or another be it either all employees of a certain Union or all CEOs just keeps us fighting among ourselves and is self defeating in the long run. Do some real research on the issues, don't take this web site or Fox News or CNN or anyone else at their word... find out for yourself as the facts may surprise you and change your mind. Peace, cool music and fast cars to all !!!!
