Steve Jobs Says 2011 Is Year Of The iPad 2. We Say Of Audi And Hyundai Too.
I had the fortunate opportunity to spend the last week enjoying Stuttgart, Bologna and Geneva and driving a stable of new Audi's and Lamborghini's courtesy of Audi.

Yea, I know. TOUGH life, right?

Well, I'll use my best Rudy Rutiger to put it in perspective.

If we didn't do our jobs YOU wouldn't have the insider knowledge you do when it comes to the world's finest vehicles.

2011 Geneva Motor Show Photo Gallery

At AutoSpies.com, it's important we give you the brutally honest truth when we drive cars, unlike many of the other "in the tank" outlets you may frequent.

But just as important as vehicle impressions, we also pride ourselves in being first to spot major and minor trends in the industry.

We're different than the others because we'll TAKE A CHANCE and make a prediction if a new ride is going to be a STUD or a DUD as we so aptly call them.

Take for example the BMW X6.

If you look across ALL the media outside of AutoSpies.com since it's introduction, you'll find a common trend in their assessment of BMW's most in your face fashion statement yet.

They all said it was useless,  ugly and it wouldn't find enough customers.

And as USUAL, THEY were wrong.

And the reason they were wrong was because most of the reviewers are either way too old and crusty to spot a trend if it smacked them in the face or too young and inexperienced understanding today's customers.

Because they just don't roll with the prosumers enough to know whats happening there and what's important to them in a vehicle.

I've always said the two most valuable things we offer you outside of the best content and perspective is: 1) we're based on Southern California -- we spot the trends first  2) we're REAL luxury vehicle customers OURSELVES so we KNOW what it's like to spend our OWN money on a vehicle.

We aren't un-passionate writers living in Manhattan who will probably NEVER drop down a dime of their own dough on a nice ride and only do this job only to get free trips (TRUST ME, we see this EVERY DAY!).

In other words, we have SKIN IN THE GAME.

And as the founder of Auto Spies, I believe nothing could be more important.

Let me spell this out...WE WILL NEVER SELL OUT AND GIVE A VEHICLE A GOOD REVIEW IF WE DON'T LIKE IT. EVER. NO MATTER WHAT FREE TRIP WE GET OR PERK TO REVIEW IT. YOU HAVE MY WORD ON IT.

I know I'm blessed to have you as readers, and I respect the trust and loyalty you have given the spy in the sky. Or shroud in the cloud.

So that said, let me share my perspective for 2011 and make some predictions.

First off, it was great to see Steve Jobs at the iPad 2 launch making his prediction that 2011 would be the year of the iPad 2.

We are in agreement there.

But being car guys we'd like to add that we believe 2011 will also be the year for Audi and Hyundai as well.

We've already picked the 2011 Elantra as our car of the year and by the end of the year when the numbers are out this 40MPG gem is going to rock the compact car world. Even MORE so if gas prices go where we think they will.

So that news is all well and good but this is Auto Spies, home of the best coverage of the world's finest brands.

So let me focus now on Audi.

I've owned about 65 cars over my 30 or so years of driving, 4 being Audi's.

A 2001 Audi A6 4.2, 2005 S4 (oooh, Nagaro Blue with two-tone blue and black, it was my favorite Audi) and two Audi A8L's.

I enjoyed them but they were all too heavy and slow in comparison to the competition at that time.

And over the last few years with every improved model they sent out, although they were all still good, they didn't shed the weight so although they were packaged nicely, the result was always the same.

001 went to the Audi dealer to look and drive and then over to the BMW dealer to buy the BMW or the Porsche.

And although 001 likes gorgeous styling, fit and finish probably more than most, fast, light and nimble makes him a happier camper, hence the BMW and Porsche ending up in the driveway versus the Audi's.

And then a few years ago we broke the story of Audi's execs saying the new mantra going forward will be light and nimble and I said I'll believe it when I see it.

Well Spies, in the past few weeks in Europe, I've SEEN it. And I LIKE it!

So much so, that my next sedan in the stable will be an Audi.

Auto Spies regular (Iamevilhomer), you can get up off the floor now.

Can you guess which one I'm leaning toward?

I'll give you a clue and make a prediction.

Remember how wagons started to lose their popularity in the USA right around the time the SUV craze began it's cycle?

And how wagons got a stigma of being a mommy or old man car?

Well we believe there is a new trend brewing.

We see the SAME thing happening here in SoCal and in the trendsetting towns in the USA.

And that is: conservatively-styled SEDANS are the new wagons. In other words OLD MAN CARS.

You can take the survey yourself to see if I'm right.

TRY, just TRY to find a really hot YOUNG woman or stylish successful guy driving an S-Class, LS, etc.

It's becoming HARDER and HARDER.

Most of the time you see an S-Class in LA for example, an airport transport guy or hotel concierge shuttle guy is driving it. NOT the new taste makers.

Those people value the utility but want STYLE that projects youth and fitness.

Figured out what Audi that is yet?

Let me clue you in:

It's the all-new Audi A7.

And before I go into detail on the car let me tell you it will be another runaway success for Audi.

This car is special. REAL special.

It looks AMAZING from every angle and its light and nimble road manners combined with the legendary Audi fit and finish, makes this new budding superstar hard to beat.

And it looks like how the sedan of the future should look like.

Plus that spoiler! Sooo cool!!!

Audi...PLEASE put that on the next A4.

In fact, I'll go out on a limb here.

I think if car companies DON'T start styling their everyday sedans more like this, they will become your father's Oldsmobile.

I also think I will be a huge sales success for Audi.

Bigger than they think not only from unit sales but from an impression builder of the brand.

Like the R8 of sedans or dare we say the every man's Rapide?

And the deal sealer is the fact that most of the mainstream auto media was not sold on the design ala X6 that we had talked to.

So we believe it's guaranteed to be a success! ;)

Enough on the A7, let's talk Audi in general...

Every time I've been to Europe over the past few years I saw a lot of Audi's on the road but this time I saw more than ever.

They are COMPLETELY on fire there and that trend is bubbling here in the USA.

They were EVERYWHERE on the road throughout Europe.

Ask anyone on the street who is in the know and they will tell you that Audi has achieved the number one spot in the cool factor compared to other premium brands.

The beautiful people are now driving Audi's. If you need more proof, check out paparazzi shots and see what car is most commonly seen: a black Audi.

And they've yet to even drive the new light and more nimble versions!

Wait till they taste the NEW Audi.

Look out.

When they hit your dealers, you HAVE to go test one or three.

They are TOTALLY different cars than you are used to.

They can please even the most diehard BMW fan.

Like me.

So Steve you ARE right.

As you drive around in your Audi Coupe, 2011 WILL be the year of the iPad 2.

But it will also be the year of Audi and Hyundai.

As they say in New Orleans, We GUARANTEE it!

AND like the iPad 2, you can also get the A7 in WHITE!

Enjoy the photos and the beautiful scenery from Switzerland

I love the A7. First time I saw pics, didnt think it looked too hot, but saw it in person and drooled. One of the most stunning cars in their line up IMO

Great looking car, only complaint I have is that the kink at the back of the side windows, is not very audi. I really liked how Audi avoided following that trend on the A5 and I wish they would have done the same with the A7. it makes the very bottom of the roofline look a little like a lexus GS. Luckily the car is so good looking that I can overlook this small part. It will definitely be a hit.

hmmm just looked up the A5 sportback and it has the same side windows, maybe it is a design cue they are going to use only on their four door coupes.

I SAW THIS CAR ON RT 80 TODAY!!!! It almost caused several accidents from people gawking at the car. Not sure what the cars in front of it was thinking but they moved out of the fast lane hastily. That NEVER happens in New Jersey. The car was STUNNING!!

I'm still trying to figure out the first part of the article where you blast readers who are not aficionados of the X6. I happen to only be 30, far from "old and crusty" as you depict, and I thinkt he X6 is complete trash. Put it in a lineup next to the Acura RDX, dump gas on them and toss a match. Useless for me and many others regardless of price. A sloped rear hatch that can hold nothing but some groceries, and cramped rear seating for even my dog. Yup a hatchback or a wagon can do much more and look better at the same time.

That aside, the new A7 is gorgeous, although again I am not interested in all the gadgetry and electronics. I don't have a need for navigation, or wifi, or facebooking while waiting to pickup someone at the airport. I drive because I like to "drive". So whatever a company can do to make me less attached to the actual act of moving the vehicle around, the less interested I am. It may be that I commute and do round-town trips with occasional vacations, but give me a box I can row by myself, hear a great engine note, and have fun doing it. I could careless if a DSG or automatic has 8 gears, can shift .0001 faster than a manual. I like to keep myself attentive.

Hence my first car for my kids will be one with a manual to keep them working on controlling the car instead of texting. The only piece of technology I would approve of is a signal canceller that would not allow use of a cell phone in the car while it is in motion or not connected to the hands free.

@Whelan

The X6's rear seats are quite roomy as you can set the seat in front for someone that's 6'2 then they can walk around the rear and fit comfortably in back as well.

I think you're confusing the X6 with Acura's ZDX, which is notoriously one of least comfortable SUVs with people around 5'10 complaining of cramped room.

Opinions are like....never mind! Not even sure why some people log on here!! I happen to think the X6 was, and is, a game changer and will be sought after and copied for YEARS to come!! Classic!!

Anyway, nice job Audi, the A7 is nice indeed! Definitely a looker!

Sometimes you have to give credit when credit is due. If Toyota or Lexus built something I liked, I'd complement them too. Dont get it twisted though, the current Audis are still over-priced, are front heavy, underperform at thier price points, and with the exception of a few models are generic looking.

But that A3 looks promising. But a 400hp Audi is going to cost a pretty penny. I'm willing to bet that a 400hp A3 will cost as much as the BMW M3.

Oh no Audi... Take that back. That is the worst application of your pop up nav screen EVER. Look how it looks in that 13th pic from the top! Looks like a laptops screen sitting on the dash...

Other than that though, this car is beautiful!!!

JustaCarJustaCar - 3/7/2011 10:43:28 AM

Regarding the pop up screen - those who hate it should ask themselves the question whether the engineers at Audi evaluated its merits before starting to implement it across the Audi line? You bet they did. There are several advantages to the pop up screen. If you look at that 13th picture LACMAN refers to, you'll see that the screen is considerably higher up than it would be if it were built into the dash board. This puts it at a much more ergonomic and safer viewing height. Imagine trying to make the dashboard that high to encapsulate the screen? (Think the double hump dashboard in previous generation BMWs). You'll notice that the new A8, A7, A6 and now the A3 study shown at Geneva all have a much lighter airier front cabin because they do not have the center binnacle to house the screen. Just compare the dash on the outgoing A6 to the new A6.
Another benefit is that the screen can be stowed away when not needed, which is actually most of the time. The second screen Audi designed in the instrument cluster provides almost all of the information the driver needs including nav.

Exactly

I have on many occasions wished to turn off the screen at nights as the light it emits is quite distracting especially on unlit roads.

In an audi you can retract the screen and the nav display continues on the screen located between the rev and speed counters.

Even on some really fast day trips i retract the nav screen as i want no distractions.

Also the lower horizon effect is wonderful.

I've seen the A7 in the flesh, and it is indeed attractive. It also stands out in a crowd, like a Panamera. And in a good way.

To me, although there is a strong resemblance between most Audi sedans, and I'm not warm to their gaping hole grill, I prefer their style, inside and out, compared to BMW and MB. And I own 2 BMWs, which I love. Now if they could only make their cars handle like an M3, we'd have an interesting situation :-)

As for the iPad 2, my understanding is that it's just an upgrade to the 1, and really what the original iPad *would* have been. iPad fans should read some reviews, such as those in CNET. The iPad 3 will the "the thing" for iPad fans. That's where the real changes, and big step up will happen.

oo1: Nice pics!

the A7 looks ok, but it's the least "coupe-ish" looking of the "four door coupe" class. The new CLS looks better to me, though if I were actually getting a vehicle in this class I'd just wait a year for the 6 Gran Coupe.

thanks for the advice, and I appreciate you "correcting" what I see when I look at it, but I have 20/10 vision. From the side, to me, it looks like a GS. And from the front it looks like every other Audi. Feel free to "correct" that too.

So you can't tell which one is bubbly is which one is angular?

It may look like a GS from the side to you, but that doesn't mean that it actually does? 20/10 vision or not. I’m sure there are folks out there who think that Rosanne Barr looks like Haile Berry. That doesn't mean that they are correct.

And about the front looking like every other Audi? It's good to have brand features (it's like a family). And besides… The front end design isn't lacking IMO, to make it look different just for difference sake, would probably end up making it look worse.

LexSucks, the words you keep using are "you are wrong". The words you are looking for are "I don't agree". Maybe you want to look them up with your awesome vision, they mean different things. My opinion is that the profile of the A7 looks like a GS. That's what I see when I look at it, whether you do or not. I didn't say I thought that made it a bad looking car, just not as distinctive, TO ME, as the CLS or upcoming 6-Series Gran Coupe.

As much as it pains me ‘and it does’ I agree with LexSucks Perez here. It does look like the Lexus GS from the side profile from the very front to the back of the front doors but that is all. The middle to rear and C-pillar doesn’t match.

A7 is very provacative. And for those not familiar with past Audis, go back to the 70's and check out the Coupe they had at the time. They have one at the Audi museum in Ingolsdat. That is where the design reference comes from. Back end totally inspired from the 70's Coupe.

Hmm, the A7 looks a little ordinary to me. But everyone has their own tastes. Maybe its just me but all the midrange luxury cars look ordinary to me especially Lexus and Audi but for a few exceptions like the Audi A5. BMW and Mercedes seem to try a little bit more. Overtime they all seem to look dated after a few years. But hey, they are mass produced and sale like crazy so who can argue with success?
