LaHood Says Study Will Determine If Ban On Hands Free Cell Phone Use Is Needed
Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said today he won't call for restrictions on hands-free cell phones or in-vehicle systems, such as Ford Motor Co.'s Sync, until the government conducts further research.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating whether hands-free phones or systems like Sync pose a "cognitive distraction" to drivers.

- There's a big difference between talking on a cell phone while driving and talking to someone sitting next to you. The person sitting next to you shares your environment, and can actually inform you of something that's is ahead to avoid (even mid conversation). The person on the other end of the phone doesn't have the luxury.

More people have to die first before something is done about it. Either that or a prominant person has to die because of a cell phone related acccident. Humans learn from trail and error, and are rarely proactive when it comes to figuring out what can kill you.
