Spain Lowers National Speed Limit, Should The US Follow And Drive 55?

Spain Lowers National Speed Limit, Should The US Follow And Drive 55?
In a move reminiscent of the OPEC crisis in 1974 in the U.S., Spain is lowering its national speed limits as a result of the ongoing crisis in Libya, as fears over that country’s oil supplies continue to rise, pushing  prices upward.

According to the BBC, Spain is particularly vulnerable, not only because it imports much of the oil it uses, but  also because around 13 percent of said black gold actually comes from Libya.

Shouldn't the title of the thread be:

"Spain Lowers National Speed Limit To 68 MPH, Should The US Follow?"

What a sh*t headline. This is what happens when the poster doesn't read his own article.

You are correct. From the article: "As a result, the country is looking to curb fuel usage and one way the Spanish Government figures it can do that is by lowering the national speed limit from 120 km/h (75 mph), down to 110 km/h (68 mph)."

Should we lower it too?? I'm confused, the speed limit in CT has been 55 still for awhile. Only in some parts is it 65 or in upstate where there is less congestion.

This is freaking stupid! Deal with the actual problem, deal with OPEC and the speculators on wall street and look into alternative fuels. Lowering the speed limit is just stupid considering most people don't even follow them.

Spain is a bankrupt economy, just holding on for dear life. Portugal, Italy, Ireland, Greece and Spain make up what are called "the PIIGS of the European Union". Their economies are so bad that they really do not qualify to use the Euro as their currency. That said I am not surprised to see these measures in place, when the truth is there is NO real evidence to support that lower speed limits lower national fuel bills.
