You've really got it backwards. VWs are Audis in their underwear and, even stripped down as they are, probably couldn't sell cheaply enough nor have any performance editions without the luxury division's margins and R&D to subsidize them.

Besides, I don't think there is a luxury car made that isn't somewhat of a sucker's proposition. BMW fans love the idea that BMW "doesn't make any economy cars," as if each component of the car had nothing but luxury or performance origins and was therefore worth every penny, but the profit BMW made is just as much an indicator of "overpricing" as it is with all successful luxury marques.
