Hybrid Excitement? Toyota Hints FT-86 Will Have A Hybrid Version
It’s a welcome return to sporting Toyotas of the past – but the new FT-86 is likely to spawn a hybrid version, the firm has revealed.

The rear-wheel-drive coupé was unveiled at the Geneva show in near-production form, and will be built alongside a sister car from Subaru, which also supplies the 2.0-litre flat-four boxer petrol engine.

I didn't think that Tuner Kidz would be interested in hybrids.

Amazing things can be done with voltage converters...

Toyota needs to its real sport car back the Supra and not worry so much about replacing the Celica.

If Toyota could build a car that could compete with the Nissan 370Z, Subaru WRX or STI, Mitsu Evo, V8 Mustang or Camaro(sorry, V6s in these cars don't, and never will, count) or the Genesis Coupe in performance & price, they would!

I know everyone loves the Toyota Supra, but aside from catching Fast & the Furious on TBS or TNT, the Supra ain't coming back.

Don't forget that when it comes to Electric engines the torque converts immediatly into wheel movement which is why Teslas do the 0-60 in under 4 seconds.

This could make for fantastic accelerations if done right

like the Mitsu E-Boost that they featured on the Eclipse concept a few years back or the Porsche 911 & 918 Hybrids or even the original Accord V6 Hybrid.

Hybrid Excriment, look for the hybrid version to weigh in at 3500lbs and have 180hp combined.

Keeping the weight down will be key if they intend to go for the hybrid version. This is the type of car you should be able to around any corner you desire, whether it is powered by hybrid tech or not.

I'm glad they're starting to take direction in this type of vehicle. I like it.

You don't want to give the kids access to modding a hybrid car unless you want them to electrocute themselves.

I called this in the last article when they first showed the Type II. Congrats on killing a potential winner Toyota.

Also call it the proper name FT-86 II as they refer to it after boy racers got their hands on designers.

With all the defects and lawsuits re the Prius, it's anyone's guess as to what horrors the Recall King will produce in a hybrid. My 3/4/2011 blog post addresses the "Toyota factor" re the FT-86: http://uc2.blogspot.com/2011/03/toyota-liability-for-lotus-ft-86.html

Wait...so the toyota will have subaru's 2.0L NA 150hp flat four? I thought it was getting its own 2.0L DI engine with closer to 200hp.

Why Toyota?

Before this thing even sets foot on a U.S road it will already be beaten to crap by a Hyundai Genesis Coupe (don't even bring up the 370z). 150hp? what is this? 1982?

This car could have had so much potential, but as usual with Toyota they turn it into an appliance. A Nice looking appliance. But still an appliance.

The FT is supposed to compete with the Mazda Miata, not the Gen coupe or 370Z, which is why it is more important to keep the weight down on this car rather than injecting it with hp and have it not take corners as well.

@Duesen

If Toyota is producing the FT-86 to compete against the Miata, then this is a giant FAIL!

The FT-86 is going to be marketed and bought by the same people that buy the Scion Tc. Toyota will steal a few Mustang and Camaro shoppers who want to be different.

The flat four will keep the weight down as well as the center of gravity. Look at the prius. It's not heavy by any means. With new hybrid tech and better battery capacity, Toyota can hit a home run. Tesla doesn't weigh much does it? The car will be less than 2900lbs. and have probably 250hp combined I'd say. That's better than the Z car, the Genesis Coupe and anything above it within the price range.

I hate to burst your bubble, but even if the hybrid version had a performance tilt to it, this car is not going to come close to beating a 350/370 Z. This is okay because this car was never meant to.

This car is designed to go after VW GTIs, Civic Type R's, Sentra V-Specs and the like.

It's like having an electric supercharger. Smooth and instant torque.
