Volkswagen AG recalled more than 12,000 Routan minivans in the United States because of a defect that could allow the key to slip while driving, causing the engine to shut down without warning.

The 12,612 minivans were manufactured from October 2009 through June 2010, according to a posting on the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration website on Thursday.

The Routan minivans have been built at Chrysler Group LLC's plant in Windsor, Ontario since August 2008. Earlier this month, Chrysler, which is managed by Italy's Fiat SpA, recalled more than 248,000 crossovers and minivans because of the same defect.

There's a difference between a recall because the little strap that holds the gas tank lid on can come undone and sOmething like this. Not all recalls are equal.

Let me fix the title. Options are:

"VW recalls rebadged Dodge Caravans"
"Chryslers mini-van recall affects shared VW Routan platform"
"VW's failed attempt to appeal to van buyers is recalled, suprisingly for the SAME reason as Chrysler mini-vans"

If Volkswagen is now making cars fitted to US buyers with a less performant platform and cheaper assemblies made in Mexico and Canada, how are they any different than Chrysler ?

VW Caravan ftw
