BMW's new 535d Sedan Gets 33 MPG - BMWNA: BRING THIS CAR TO THE U.S.
The Diesel Driver is once again teasing us with one of BMW's amazing diesel-powered Autobahn machines: the new 535d gets an incredible 31 mpg in mixed (city and highway) driving on their test run from Munich to Bratislava. The only problem: it's not available in the U.S. and BMW hasn't announced firm plans to bring it here in 2011. With Mercedes offering the E350 Bluetec and S350 Bluetec, BMW needs to bring in more diesels esp. since the E90 335d will probably stop production by the end of the year.

The MPG in the headline is correct, it is 33 mpg. There is a typo in the copy - it is of course 33, not 31 mpg.

My wife would love the 320d especially for the fuel economy.

A natural competitor to the Infiniti M35h. I would love to see a comparison test.

the diesel car is not coming to the US. As much as i would love to see a competitive line up of D cars from overseas its not going to happen. The price of diesel fuel is high on purpose for you not to get the best for your money. The environmental nut jobs are pushing hybrids and electric cars not Diesel cars which are by far better and a better investment. Oh yea you dont think governmental motors wants competition for their volt which is what 40 grand lol what a joke

that's good news and bad news. I'd have rather had the 2.0L four cylinder diesel the rest of the world gets. A 40-50mpg 520d or X3 xDrive20d would be incredible.

Yeah but even though Diesel is higher, the fuel economy advantage easily pays off. Compare the fuel economy of the jetta 2.5 with the jetta 2.0 tdi which is under rated. The cost difference between diesel and premium fuel is about $2.00 or less per tank, and given the fuel economy advantage of the diesel it would take probably less a gallon to make up for the cost difference in some cars like the Jetta and 3 series.

Even though it is ridiculously out of my price range, I give respect to BMW for this car. I have seen a few new 5's on the road and they are a HUGE improvement over the last generation.

Now offering a car that size in diesel with abilities to get 30+mpg (at that point who cares 31 or 33) is amazing in itself. With the new CAFE standards requiring the avg MPG to go up across a lineup I am surprised they have not started offering more diesels here.

I could only guestimate on a couple of reasons:

1) Cost. BMW may actually lose a little on importing these diesels so it is not worth it monetarily. Or they are waiting to possibly open a US plant to build these cars in (reduced cost).

2) Holding out for the last minute until the CAFE standard becomes a reality, no sense in jumping the gun.

3) With the new efficient dynamics vision small car thing they are working on, they may not see a need to be in the luxury diesel market in the US.
