Two Years Later Washington Still Can't Say What The Goal Of Automotive Bailout Really Was
The panel overseeing the $700 billion fund that was used to rescue Wall Street financial institutions and the U.S. auto industry says the jury is still out on whether the auto industry was salvaged for the long-term by the taxpayer-funded bailout.

In a final report released today, the bipartisan Congressional Oversight Panel, which has monitored the bailout for more than two years, said it will be difficult to determine the success of the $85 billion auto rescue "since Treasury has never clearly stated its goals in assisting the companies."

You know those people who would have bitched like crazy if the government did *NOT** give billions of tax-payer dollars and borrowed money to the auto industry? At least the bail-out shut *them* up! Well, sorta. The UAW is bitching that they want big bonuses because they made "big concessions" earlier. Okay, so maybe it just shut *some* of them up.

Call me jaded, but I'm getting the impression that you can't make everyone happy, no matter how much tax-payer and borrow money you redistribute.

The goal for this administration and the Democrats was simple--bail out thier buddies in the unions and assure a steady supply of campaign funds and votes for the future. I hate to be so cynical, but that's my view.

@bobw, the bailout started with the Bush administration, not the Obama admin.

The auto companies were struggling before the bank scandels in 2008.Frankly though it was the bank scandels that ultimately did them in. It prevented marginal credit buyers(which is over 50% of the auto buying public)from purchasing a car.Had the banks not collasped ultimately GM would have gone down a lot more slowly,Chrysler would have been eventually sold to somebody and Porsche would have owned VAG.If they did not receive the bailouts both companies and probably Ford would have gone down (due to the parts supply companies going out of business).
