UAW Prepares To Demand Larger Share Of Automaker Profits

United Auto Workers bargainers are coming to town next week to prepare for national contract talks later this year with Detroit's automakers. All you need to remember are three numbers:

First, $6.6 billion, the profit Ford Motor Co. booked last year. Second, $4.7 billion, General Motors Co.'s earnings in 2010. And, third, $133 million, the sum total of long-term stock awards Ford granted its top 20 executives — $56.5 million of which, pretax, ended up in CEO Alan Mulally's portfolio. Cash bonuses for last year? Those are still to be released.

Just to add to what nonofyobus said, it appears that GM's claims of profitability have been bolstered solely by the infusion of tax-payer bailout cash, and IPO invest cash, *both* of which are holding the short end of the stick at the moment.

What GM has done, in the short terms, is redistributed their losses to tax-payers and share-holders. Mark my words, folkd, this is not a sustainable model for carrying on business. Not unless the government makes bail-outs a regular thing.

Hmmmm. Government run enterprises. Workers being guaranteed jobs and a certain standard of living by the state. Redistribution of wealth from the rich to the workers. This reminds me of the former Soviet Union's approach to matters. Last time I checked, that didn't work out too well.

So the UAW once again manages to make a nuclear-tsunami-recall ridden country sound like a good investment

I feel for the first. The second can suck it up! Pay the UAW!!

"Government run enterprises. Workers being guaranteed jobs and a certain standard of living by the state. Redistribution of wealth from the rich to the workers. This reminds me of the former Soviet Union's approach to matters"

Works out well for all the newly minted billionaires who bought up state run businesses. That is called capitalism! Don't knock it!! Hence the story of the richest man in Russian! Hi Roman!

ps
Stay BEHIND the bullet RESISTANT glass.

Don't you guys make enough money already? I bust my ass in the oilfield which demands far more intellect and physical work and don't get paid near what the average floor sweeper probably makes at GM.

Probably no union breaks either, or your union buddies telling the overachieving new guy on the job to 'slow down,' because he's working too fast.

So, How many more plants can they move to Mexico.....The UAW and other unions just do not seem to get it. We have 9% unemployment and that is only the folks collecting checks. The real number, considering those who have run out of benefits and those who have been unemployed for more then 2 years, and just stopped looking for work, is closer to 18-19%. So, go in there, bang on shoe on the table and watch as the suits move one plant at a time out of the country, just as they did in the past. And, then you will wake up one day and realize the only people collecting checks are the the union bosses.
