Jaguar XS, the new Bmw 3-Series rival
It’s not a secret anymore that Jaguar is planning to take on the compact segment, dominated by the Bmw 3-Series, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and the Audi A4. Few weeks ago at the Geneva Motor Show, Bertone came with the Jaguar B 99 Concept, its vision of how the 3-Series fighter should look like. Many of you folks (including 4WheelsNews team) liked the new concept, but not Jaguar, who said that the B 99 is simply

Pardon me, folks, but the picture on this page looks to me like a new approach to "old money styling." There's nothing wrong with that, except that it is well known that BMW attracts a younger crowd. Part of that appeal to the younger crowd is BMW's legendary 3-series handling, granted, but it also includes BMW's younger and more aggressive approach to styling, and arguably even the brand's image.

I speculate that this specific Jag will have a hard time giving the 3-series a hard time. Maybe even all Jags in the foreseeable future. But don't feel bad, Jaguar. Pretty much everyone is having a hard time here. And that's not because there aren't some really great cars out there (the stock Nissan GTR bests any stock BMW's time on the 'Ring), but because there is only one BMW 3-series.

PS: I'm anything *BUT* a BMW FanBoi. I much prefer Audi's style, inside and out. But I tip my hat to BMW for what it does really well. Even if it's not for me.

This car will never compete with a 3 series, C class or A4 even. Those Cars are all extremely sporty performance oriented luxury cars with very agressive styling. This looks like an old mans car as jaguars have tended to be for quite some time. Its boring.

Exactly and well said, since sometimes excitement doesn't let you be rational and objective.

Jaguar has the experience of what happened with the X type and nowadays I don't think they will do the same mistake again, plus as far as I know and for what I have heard, probably some of the new models are going to benefit from Jaguar's vastly experience in aluminum chassis fabrication

This is an old X-Type that is based on the European Ford Mondeo platform (and as a result is FWD). It was never dynamically competent but far more comfort biased, which is a shame since Jaguar has always been a sporty brand, even more so than Audi or Mercedes, which are far more comfort-oriented, especially Mercedes'.

Correct-This is not the new XS it is the old unsuccessful X type. There is no picture of the XS yet.The speculation is that it will look somewhat like the XF and XJ in a smaller package. Both the XF and XJ are great cars and are more fun to drive than the comparable BMW,Audi, and Mercedes models. I predict the new XS will compete well against the all mighty 3 series.
