Are Mandatory State Safety Inspections Even Worth The Hassle?

Are Mandatory State Safety Inspections Even Worth The Hassle?

Fourteen state senators want to do away with safety inspections for vehicles in the North Carolina. Led by state Senator Stan Bingham (R-Denton), the group introduced Senate Bill 123 last month in response to a 2008 legislative report suggesting the benefit of imposing the $165 million annual burden on motorists has yielded no measurable safety benefit.

Each year, the state’s 6.1 million vehicles must be taken to a private station for a $13.60 safety inspection. Vehicles registered in half of the state’s counties must also take a $30 emissions test. The state only keeps 85 cents out of the safety inspection fee, with the remainder kept by the inspector who also earns significant revenue by repairing whatever faults he discovers.

Your info is wrong. The state keeps $6.25 from every state emissions test. They keep $0.85 from every safety inspection done. Every county does safety tests. Only certain counties do emissions testing. Most vehicles built in 1995 or before is subject to a minimum safety inspection in all counties. After 1995, vehicles is certain counties are subject to an emissions test. An emissions test is $30.00, and includes the safety portion of the test. A safety inspection is $13.60,
These fees are set by the sate in NC, and no station can charge more, however, they can, if they desire, charge less. The state still takes their piece of the pie. Vehicles with window can be charged and addition $10.00, this is considered part of the safety test. Which windows and the tint limits are addressed in the state inspection rules.
