X6 Killer? Audi Targets BMW With New Performance Oriented Q6

Audi has kicked off development of a new performance orientated crossover model to counter the BMW X6.

Set to be called the Q6, the five-seat crossover is rumoured to be based around the same four-wheel drive underpinnings as the second-generation Volkswagen Touareg and Porsche Cayenne, both of which use a short wheelbase (2895mm) version of the Volkswagen Group’s so-called Colorado platform that in long-wheelbase (3000mm) form is also used beneath the Audi Q7.

Q7 is more a competitor to the X5. Q5 is to the X3. so the Q6 would be more crossover than small SUV putting it in a separate category. No matter what BMW says or calls their X models, the X3 and X5 are SUV's. The X6 is the only crossover.

I'm sure it will be a very good vehicle but why does it have to "kill" anything?

I'm not an SUV fan, nor a BMW FanBoi, but I gotta say the X5 looks a lot nicer (to my eyes) than the Q series. Audi's offering looks much more truck-like.

My posting seems a bit confusing, since this thread's subject is "X5 Killer?..." while the body speaks to the X6, and entirely different vehicle. Autospies would be served well with an Edit button, as well as a Delete button.

"Killer" the most over used word in the Autospies lexicon (and the intire automotive industry).

LOL What a joke, my X5M can beat an R8 v8, let alone any Q6.

if it's based on the Q5 it's likely going to be a whole lot smaller and less expensive than the X5-based X6. The new X3 is substantially bigger than the Q5, and BMW is making a "coupe" X4 based on that, so if anything that would be the Q6 competitor.

Since the X5 and X6 are mechanically the same how can one be an SUV and the other a crossover? Why can't a crossover be an SUV and vice versa? Many would argue that the X3 and X5 are not true SUVs because of their poor off-road abilities.

I think that is the real question for the Q6, will it be designed to handle off-road, or like the X6 will it be designed to be fast and arguably, as Clarkson put it, absolutely ridiculous.

X5 = SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle)
X6 = SAC (Sports Activity Coupe)

Audi = Always Unimpressed Driving It!!
