What Is The Most Overrated SUV or CROSSOVER You've Owned Or Driven?
It wasn't too long ago that we saw gas prices rising through the roof and consumers were sent RUNNING from their gas-guzzling sport-utilities like it was the 40-yard dash. Fast forward to 2011 and what do you know? Consumers have hopped right back into the driver's seats of SUVs and crossovers, which is a market that is continuing to expand with new products.

From cars like the 2011 Ford Explorer to the Range Rover Supercharged, there is a HUGE amount of offerings and that's because buyers thoroughly enjoy the elevated ride height and amount of space these vehicles typically provide. But we're here for another reason today:

We want to know which SUV or crossover that you've driven has thoroughly underwhelmed you. In fact, we want you to name the vehicles that you find overrated.

Some examples that come to mind:

- BMW X3 (first-generation)

- Cadillac Escalade

- Mercedes-Benz M-Class

- Audi Q5

- Porsche Cayenne (first-generation)

- Toyota Highlander

- Jeep Grand Cherokee

- Land Rover Freelander

The entire SUV category was created by marketers so I'm not sure how one is worse than others. I could probably be most cynical with the V6 Cayenne loaner I got from the Porsche dealer, but I was grateful to have the ride to get to work on time.

As with any consumer product, SUV's were produced because buyers wanted them and continue to want them. No matter how good the marketing, if there are no buyers the product goes the way of the Dodo. GM is a testament to designing and marketing bad cars that go away in a generation or less (of course they're certainly not the only ones).
I'm not an SUV person but my wife has had a couple mid-sized vehicles--M-B M-class to be exact--and I guarantee that automotive "marketeers" have had exactly zero influence on her buying decisions. Her next vehicle will be a sedan (BMW 5-series next year), again, not because she's seen any car ads (and I have no influence on her car buying habits), she likes nice cars and sees them around the neighborhood.

Without a doubt the BMW X5 3.0i I purchased a couple of years ago was the worst vehicle. Why? - well here are some reasons:

i.) Slow, ponderous, heavy, lacking in acceleration and space.
ii.) Poor build quality, exceptionally cheap plastics inside, and the doors were made with metal so thin they flexed when opening or closing.
iii.) A reversing camera so inadequate I feel for older folks with cataracts.

The X5 was by far the worst and most overpriced vehicle I ever owned. After I purchased it, I noticed that in some magazines' comparison tests the BMW was losing to much lower-priced vehicles like the previous generation Toyota 4Runner and Acura MDX. Wow I felt stupid for falling for the BMW image.

In contrast the Lexus LX 470 that I had from 2004-2008 and my current SUV the Mercedes GL 450 are both exceptional vehicles. I rate the GL as the best vehicle I've ever owned, and I've had a few.

Separately a friend of mine was disappointed with his first generation Porsche Cayenne because his golden retriever would throw-up after riding in it, whereas in other SUVs the dog was fine. Needless to say this friend got rid of the Cayenne after less than six months. He was lucky and he sold it on ebay to an international buyer. I was not so lucky in getting rid of the BMW X5 and took a beating in terms of depreciation.

As an avid reader of car magazines I have never seen this road test, please supply me the link.

I'm looking for the 4runner road test, I have read the MDX beating the X5 that said also read the X5 beating the GX.

First generation BMW X5 Sport.

Worst suspension setup on any German vehicle in history.

Felt like I needed dialysis after a 10 minute ride.

Acura 2008 MDX is the worst SUV. Too many flaws off the production line, cheap plastics, stupid climate and stereo controls. Poor sound insulation and exposed screws and sharp edges. Engine noise and the styling sucks too.

From 2007 to 2009 I drove an 07 BMW X3. A mess is an understatement. Everyday I drove it I cannot expect what the auto transmission software would want to do to me. It seemed to want to tell me how to drive instead of the other way around. Not only the throttle is binary, the brakes are binary. I can have no smooth acceleration nor deceleration my body really took a beating. Lags, jerks, gears hunting... you name it, this transmission has it. There is no less than 10 transmission software updates for this car, it should really be called Research In Motion. Oh sorry that name's been taken.

The gen 1 X3 is most likely the WORST vehicle ever to wear the blue and white roundel.

The Range and reliability was the biggest thing I didnt like. Costed more than the X5 but the X5 feels, drives, and handles better. Also feel that the X5 drives, feels, and handles better than the Cayenne. But this was back in 08 when I was considering trading my X5 in for the Cayenne.

Any more questions?

G500 - what a ridiculous vehicle. Blown around easily, completely inefficient. Total joke to drive - drove like a bus.

You mean besides all of them?

SUVs are the bane of flowing traffic. Whenever you have a back-up of cars - usually in the inner lane - without any actual traffic incident, it's almost always an SUV at the front of the cluster.

2007 Mazda CX7. The slowest POS I ever drove. I learned a trick with it during the lease. If u wanna drive slow with it, floor it & it won't do anything for a couple of mins, it'll just cruise nicely. Smoke would come from turbo leak randomly. Fuel consumption from the slow a$$ 4 CYL was comparable to a V8.

Cadillac Escalade especially the first two generations. The first one was identical to the Denali, they didn't even give it a different grill, only the logo on the grill was different. People are really stupid to buy these things when you can get all of those options on a Tahoe/suburban. Anyone who can't tell that they are the same vehicle is a moron. the Saab 9-7X. the Trail Blazer was already a pos with crude cheap interior, and throwing a Saab badge on it didn't help it. Lincoln navigator, especially the first generation. an explorer with a different grill, and the new one has cheap paint that wears away from the dash and buttons. Lincoln MkT, an F-150 with some reflectors glued onto the tailgate and some chrome on the bottom of the doors.
