What's Your Take On This? A Diss To Porsche, Ferrari, BMW?
For racing fans, this weekend was a big one as the Twelve Hours of Sebring was held. It was an action-packed event this year; however, where things also got a bit interesting was during a commercial break where Chevrolet talked up its ZR1.

Don't get me wrong, the ZR1 is a very capable performer that provides plenty of value for performance but we want to know:

Is this advertisement a diss to the other guys?

As Corvette is the title sponsor of Sunday's ABC Sport's broadcast of the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring, it only makes sense to educate viewers how closely related the production cars are to the ALMS GT racers. To do so, GM showcases the Corvette ZR1 and tells viewers that when they decided to take 638-horsepower Corvette racing, they had to dial back the power just to be fair to Porsche, Ferrari and BMW. For Corvette's competition on the track and in the showrooms, sometimes the truth hurts.

Compared to what?

"Compared to what?"

- Are you serious? Compared to anything. The ZR-1 outperforms the Lexus LF-A in every performance measure. It also destroys a 911.

Yeah, they also have the largest engine and has a supercharger of course it is more powerful, but it isthe racing category determines the max horsepower, if it required more, the other automakers would give more power. The others are turned down as well. BMW's 3 series with the inline 6 races against some other touring cars with 4 cylinders. they have to turn their engines down too. They put restrictors on the M3 because although it made less torque than the mustang it battled against mostly during the series, it had more horsepower and better gearing so it had to be restricted to make the cars as evenly matched as possible. If race cars werent restricted, you'd see 1500hp and higher cars at these races with monster engines and forced induction with NOS for passing on the straights. the speed has to be limited to not kill all of the drivers.

Yea right. 1500hp? That is bad even for a guess. There isnt a tire compound in the world that could handle that kind of power for extended periods of time. F1 cars from the 80's only used that kind of power for qualifying then dialed back to 1000-1200hp. Their engines were under 2 litres as well. That kind of power can be achieved in a daily driver.

Of course there is... Look at a 917/30 in qualifying trims...

BMW had an F1 in the 80's that they used for qualifying that was over 1,200hp out of a 1.8l 4 cylinder.

Dialing back 168 hp from 638, that would make all of the other cars 470hp, which is below many of their outputs. Had a foreign car company said that about ford, they would be getting sued because they are not the only automaker turning their engines down to meet the regulations of a specific racing class. A 911 turbo makes more than that stock as well as most Ferris. So almost every one is dialing their engines back, and its not to make things fair, it is to meet the rules of the racing class.

True, many of the production GT cars have versions with more power than the racing GT cars, the 911 Turbo and 458 Italia make more than their race versions, only the M3 makes fewer horses stock. The reason about the restrictors that the ACO puts on the cars to allow different engine types to race competively. But the power output doesn't really matter as the racing veresions are significantly quicker on the track than the more powerful production versions, take a look at a Road & Track comparison between the stock and ALMS race cars.

Never seen a Nissan commercial like that. If I recall a lot of people called bs on the claims with the GTR. Now that there is proof, people are making excuses.

um, you guys were not asked to dial it back... Its either dial it back or you are not racing... Thats called regulations. they didnt ask because every car in that class had to "dial" back on their output to meet regulations of the GT class...

dumb advertisement... If you are going to put out a commercial like that, at least win the class...
