Does The Equus Really Have What It Takes to Hang With The Big Boys?

Does The Equus Really Have What It Takes to Hang With The Big Boys?
My roommate – bless her heart – is about as much of a car enthusiast as the BMW X6 is a coupe. She puts forth an honest effort to hold conversations with me about autos, but 90 percent of the time, it just doesn't work. You have to understand, in her eyes, a Cadillac Escalade is the pinnacle of luxury, the fastest car in the world has to be a Ferrari and the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution is fitted with "those squeezy seats." She's still amazed by the power of Bluetooth and always gets wide-eyed whenever I plunk a car into Reverse and a rear-view camera comes on.

That in mind, it will come as no surprise to learn that when the 2011 Hyundai Equus Ultimate arrived at my door, she beckoned from the other room, "Hey, I think your Lexus just showed up."

Uh, no. Good start. Toyota "Lexus" is concerned. The big boys are not.

They'll win big points when it comes to customer experience, that's for sure, if the car holds up well long term it'll serve Hyundai quite well in the way of reputation.

One thing that makes me wonder allot about the sense of this car is the level of prestige you're comfortable entrusting into a Hyundai, a car company like Toyota introduced a Lexus LS400 at a base price of 35 000 $ in 1990, the car was technologically superior and had hundreds of innovations.

This car is a bold statement from Hyundai, but is it innovative ?

So far it's basically like allot of Hyundai products : Looks nice, priced cheap.

Did the original LS400 had what it took to hang with the big-boys? Same answer for Hyundai.

Lexsucks, the LS400 at the time was hailed by the press as miles ahead of what the competition offered, so far the only things we hear about the Hyundai Equus is that :

1 - It's incredibly luxurius
2 - It's incredibly cheap for the luxury it offers.

The LS 400 at the time went in direct competition with Cadillac, Mercedes and BMW and here is the direct quote from CarAndDriver

The obvious answer first: the Lexus LS400 is here without (or instead of) the Infiniti Q45 because the Infiniti’s base price of $38,000 put it out of the running. It’s therefore instructive to note that our Lexus’s price as tested was a healthy—if value-packed—$39,563. And what do you get for that? A driving experience that can only be called marvelous.

With its 250-hp 4.0-liter V-8, the Lexus transports you literally and figuratively into another dimension. The car’s smoothness and air of total integration is both a wonder and a delight. The interior is among the world’s most tasteful, and the ride quality is what ought to have been meant by “boulevard ride.” Factor in capable handling and a stout power source and you get mighty close to the ideal sedan, a car whose every component works with a pleasing precision.

Yeah... Yeah... The 1989 LS400 was sweet (I was a big fan of the electro-luminescent gauges). And that V8 was a gem. But I actually preferred the Q45 from back then.

The LS400 did seriously undercut the competition in regards to price back then. But the current LS460 doesn't really do that anymore. Now the Hyundai is doing it. And FWIW, didn't some publication give the nod to the Hyundai over the LS460?

Lexsucks, I think that what the LS 400 mainly brought to the table at the time was that you didn't have to pay $75 000 for fantastic and innovative level luxury car, a lesson that forced car companies like BMW, Mercedes and Audi to re-evaluate the way they do business and take your money.

My personal belief is that the way Hyundai slid these cars could be great to the brand in the long term, but .... could be terrible if the cars aren't up to spec reliability and value wise.

Here's a quote from this article by the way !

Sure, the Genesis' interior is plenty good, but the cabin – especially in front – still has the feeling that it was designed for Korean tastes and not American sensibilities. The switchgear is exactly what you'd expect to see in every other Hyundai

I would say the big biys have nothing to worry about.

Audi has the new A8, BMW has the new 7 Series, Lexus will be coming out with a new LS soon as will Mercedes have a S-Class.

The Hyundai will be dated when all the new cars come out, but Hyundai will sell a lot because of the price and warranty.

Let the Genesis Coupe engineering/performance team have at the Equus for the next generation and then we will "compare" it to other cars in its class. (wait, does this car even have a class?)

Anyways, I just dont understand how reviews can slam Hyundai's first attempt at a car like this and the LS was praised when it debuted.
