Porsche Pajun: Porsche planning BMW 5-Series, Mercedes E-Class rival
When Porsche confirmed that it will indeed build a compact SUV by the name of Cajun, it as a pretty logical move on the Stuttgart automaker’s part due to the massive success of the Porsche Cayenne SUV.

Building on the success of the Porsche Panamera sedan, it is now reported that Porsche is working on a smaller sedan that will compete with the likes of the BMW 5-Series and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

The project is currently codenamed Pajun, for Panamera Junior (no that doesn’t mean Cajun stands for Cayenne Junior – Cajun and Cayenne are both spices). The Porsche Pajun sedan is expected to carry over the engine lineup from the Panamera so you can expect a gasoline, diesel and hybrid version.

When will we see the Porsche Pajun on the roads? Well, nothing is official as of yet, but the folks at AutoBild say sometime around 2016 with a starting price tag of €60,000 ($84,630 USD).

I hope VW/Porsche doesn't turn out like Saab and GM with the platform sharing damaging Saab's image.

If they pull it off with success sumilar to the Panamera, then I'd say they have another winner.

I gotta tip my hat to Porsche, a tiny company with a miniscule market share, but also a company that does what they do very well. Starting with the Boxster, they've created attractive, distinct, and functional new transportation forms, all true to the Porsche character.

Porsche developed the Panamera when the company was independent...

@MercedesSL: So do you think that Porsche is now going to auger in 'cuz they are no longer "independent"? Seems by your comment that you feel we can no longer expect great stuff from Porsche.

How exactly will it compete with a starting price of 84k, are you kidding me? If a Porsche starts at 84k it will end up being 120k with options, a 120k 5 series or E class, really now?

Largest shareholder of VW and Porsche is Porsche Holding - all smoke and mirrors to me. They have been platform sharing with the Cayenne (and others) even when they were perceived independent. I have a feeling this is all about fuel consumption averages .. in the new world order of European Union consumption requirements these mergers are quite obvious. How does Ferrari or Lambo continue to build such massive output engines - VW and Fiat.

BTW to compete with the king 5 series will be interesting and create massive competition. They have done so well with the Cayenne and Panamera I am curious to see how this plays out for them - 2016 is a long long time away.

The Panamera is butt-ugly, or has an ugly butt... however you word it, it just looks like a souped up station wagon. I hope they make something better looking this time.

I have been predicting this move by Porsche for the last couple of years. This does not surprise me at all.Actually I had predicted a 3 series competator. That will come next. I'm sure the car will sell like hotcakes and will be just as ugly as it's larger sibling.Figure the 300 HP Porsche V6 and the 400HP V8 and a turbo V6 hybrid.AWD will most likely be an option.A base V6 Panamera starts at 75 Grand. Figure for this vehicle to start at 60 grand. As with all Porsche's it's all about the absurdly expensive options. Figure 75 grand for an average optioned out car.
