What? Feds Considering Taxing People By The Miles Driven Each Year!

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) this week released a report that said taxing people based on how many miles they drive is a possible option for raising new revenues and that these taxes could be used to offset the costs of highway maintenance at a time when federal funds are short.

The report discussed the proposal in great detail, including the development of technology that would allow total vehicle miles traveled (VMT) to be tracked, reported and taxed, as well as the pros and cons of mandating the installation of this technology in all vehicles.

The gasoline taxes collected were supposed to go toward maintaing roads and bridges but the politicians siphoned off the money for pet projects
and public worker pensions. Now they are going to tax us saying they need the money to maintain road and bridges and people who drive more should pay more. They are addicted to tax and spend any and every way they can. My latest water bill in NY reflected that taxes and fees were
50% 0f my bill...50%!!!!! If they could tax the air we breath they would.

dumb idea. That's what taxes on gas already do. If they want to make the argument that driver's don't pay their share of the costs....show me the numbers.

So does that mean they will pay taxes on all the places they go. I imaging driving/flying to and from DC to their home states and then motorcading around for promotion and tasks eats a lot of miles as well.

What about truckers?

Lastly, its a Crock of ****. How much more can I actually pay for taxes in this country? How about cutting in areas instead of 18 million special projects and funds and services. There is WAY to much spending.

we should just cut military spending by 2% and put it to roads. we would have silver lined streets!

hey PUGPROUD, here in tacoma wa my taxes and fees are literally 4-5 times the actual bill for water usage!!

You are going to see a lot of rolled back odometers in used cars.

You're right. As has been proven in Europe, at a certain point, taxation becomes too punitive and people resort to cheating to afford a living. It becomes a case of diminishing returns as statist gov't officials raise taxes, actual revenues decline.
