Is There Such Thing As A PRACTICAL Sports Car?

Is There Such Thing As A PRACTICAL Sports Car?
It seems that the practical sports car is a mythical beast that is as common as a fire-breathing dragon. Think long and hard, what sports car is legitimately practical?

Most of the time the storage space is enough for a couple bags of groceries or two small pieces of luggage. And those infamous 2+2s? Usually they're two plus nones.

Now Porsche is making a push to show the practicality of its vehicles. An admirable feat but am I alone in thinking they should leave the Cayenne and Panamera to the around-town errands?

Considering that we know our fellow Spies have fantastic taste and have experienced plenty of sports cars, we want to know:

Is there such thing as a PRACTICAL sports car? If so, name names!

A new Porsche ad campaign is touting the many practical advantages of owning one of the German automaker's iconic sports cars...

...The ads are based on market research showing that people who've never owned a Porsche 911, Cayman or Boxster just don't understand how really useful these cars are, said David Pryor, vice president of marketing for Porsche U.S.A....

Yes, the base Carerra 4 Porsche 911:
1. 4 wheel drive, all season in any part of the U.S.
2. rear seats for kids is fine
3. very reliable as a daily driver, and can be driven to 100K miles easily
4. roof rack for ski trips, surfing, etc.
5. low maintenance, just bring it in every 15K miles (manufacturer) but most people do it at 10K to play it safe
6. Can be tracked on the weekends regularly

Probably the most practical 2+2 sports car out there.

BMW M3 Sedan is my vote for 2nd place, only because the 911 looks more the part.

Sports car in front, Golf in back. Very practical and safe as family car. Very quick as sports car.

Mazda MX5
Practical as long as you have only one friend and no need to move furniture. Insanely fun to drive (no need to brake for corners any more). Cheap and reliable too. I did do a 1400km trip with all my clothes in the boot (trunk) and a desktop computer and 21 inch CRT monitor strapped into the passengers seat and foot well. Using garbage bags instead of ordinary luggage lets you pack more in to the boot (trunk). Sold it and miss it terribly.

crimsontiger6...not sure a Miata/MX5 is practical but having owned two over the years you are right on...great cars, great fun, reliable, park it anywhere, lend it to a friend, let the kids have it for a day, miles of smiles. Every trip everywhere is a treat. I loved my yellow Boxster S
but my Miata's/MX5's were alot less hassle and more fun at legal speeds.

Both the 911 and the Boxster/Cayman have a front trunk big enough to swallow a large rubbermaid tote, a trick I love to show people. Between that and the rear trunk (Boxster), hatch (Cayman) or rear seats (911), you have enough space to do a double cart grocery run.

I've been daily driving my Boxsters for nearly ten years and there are so few sports cars on the road it is like the police banned them. It's too bad because no matter how bad my day has been I always enjoy climbing into a car I love to go home. My guess is that most people haven't even driven a modern sports car and don't know how practical, comfortable, and fun it is.

Yes my 911 GTS is very practical. Best 911 growl and with plenty of room. Advantages of GT3 without it's cons.

Yeah, M3 definitely, M5 or RS6 Avant as well, both wagons can go 200mph ad have room for the wife, kids groceries and the dog. but as far as sports cars go, GT-R would fit the bill. It has a spacious trunk and decent room in the back seats. 911 Carerra 4 as well.

I think the GTR would be perfect - fast, fun and if it gets banged up no one would notice since it started life ugly anyhow

Sure there are sports cars that can be practical. It just depends on what level of one's practicality. There are many many people who feel they need a huge gas guzzeling SUV or 4dr truck to derive their sense of practicality. Anotherwords the more room, the more practicality.Whats totally odd is that so many people who own these humongus vehicles are single people or even just a couple without kids.I see people driving large sedans by themselves. So it brings the obvious question why do we need anything so large. The reality is that you probably do not need anything larger then a sports car for most daily driving chores.Even if you go to Home Depot you can still strap on or tie down items to the roof of a car.A Mustang or Camaro can be quite useful for carrying lots of things if you make use of the space properly. Porsche has always had a philosphy of being a sportscar with practicality,Ditto for the Nissan GTR,Mustang,Challenger(you can take along a family of 5)and Camaro. You don't need the big SUV most of the time except for hauling large items, In reality you could always rent somthing for the time you need it. It may end up being a lot more cost efficient.

BMW M3 sedan would be my pick, but there are plenty of practical Sports Cars on the market nowadays.

My RX-8 was relatively practical...you could fit 4 grown ups inside, and 2 suitcases in the trunk.

Depends on your definition of a "sports" car.

I fit a 46" Sharp LCD TV in the box inside a second gen. Ford Probe once. The rear seats fold down almost flat and the hatch gate gives you great access for large items, like mountain bikes, snowboards, bookshelves, etc. Wonder why new front engine cars do not have a similar design.
