BMW night vision system now available in Ireland-Coming soon to the USA?

BMW’s innovative night vision system that uses infrared technology to allow the driver to see further than current headlight range is now available on the BMW 5 and 6 Series.

First appearing in the 7 Series last year, ahead of any system from rival manufacturers, night vision uses a Far Infrared thermal imaging camera to ‘see’ heat-emitting objects.

Night vision creates an image of pedestrians, animals, or other heat-emitting objects at distances of up to 300m – far further than any other system currently on offer and further than the 150m range of xenon headlights.

The images are then projected onto the iDrive screen.

BMW believes its system is superior to rival manufacturers as the images shown are only those that emit the most heat and so stand out far better in a driver’s peripheral vision.

The system means drivers do not have to take their eyes off the road and it is particularly effective on long stretches of unlit road or motorway.

Night vision is available as an option now on BMW 5, 6 and 7 Series models ordered in conjunction with professional navigation.

Well GM was first to come out with Night vision and Thermal Imaging between 2000-2005 in the Devilles. Cadillac place the image on the lower portion on the windshield while BMW will place it on the Nav screen. I think the Cadi system is better, but at the time Cadis were not Hot in their segment. GM may bring it back if BMW does well. BMW and MB are known for innovation and technology so it will be more accepted as an option. I am sure Japan autos will follow soon.

Make no sence. You should be able to see the whole road and not only "hot" or live things. Some times you will have a lot "cold" obstacles in front but if the system do not display those then slow down the speed or buy an MB with night vison assistance...
