To Heck With The Rank And File? UAW Official Says Pay Secondary To More Jobs
The United Automobile Workers union might allow carmakers to put more new workers on a lower wage scale to create more jobs and reopen idled plants, a U.A.W. official said Tuesday.

The official, Joe Ashton, a vice president in charge of the U.A.W.’s dealings with General Motors, said creating jobs was a priority for the union entering this fall’s negotiations with the three Detroit carmakers.

“We will look at anything, when it comes to negotiations, that will retain jobs,” Mr. Ashton said. “The most important thing going into this set of negotiations is jobs.”

I'm not sure if he cleared that comment through the membership first.

Ohh Whaa! Whine and cry! These damn Liberal unions need to sacrifice just as much as the majority of other people in the country to become more competitive. Most of us have had to make due with a lot less income to keep our lights burning in the past few years. Time these UAW leaders start recognizing that. Sometimes being competitive means working harder for less money. They keep crying and whining about "the middle class blah blah" they will continue to not have any job at all.

"A 2007 provision in the U.A.W.’s contracts with G.M., the Ford Motor Company and the Chrysler Group that allows newly hired workers to earn about $14 an hour instead of the standard rate of about $28".

If I am understanding this article correctly, PRIOR to 2007 all UAW auto workers would start at a MINIMUM of $28 dollars an hour, not including their benefits, health insurance, and other factors. And some of these foolish UAW workers want us "regular" people to believe they should be given bonuses now. Everytime a auto company starts to find it's way out of bankruptcy, you don't immediately put your hand out for your cut.

Produce a QUALITY product and don't be so greedy when these companies are trying to get back on their feet again. No wonder most sensible folks dislike the unions. Mr. King - you go ahead a negotiate new hirees starting at $14 dollars an hour, because I see your $28 dollar an hour employees sitting on their fat a@@ telling the $14 dollar per hour person what to do. "It's not in our UAW job description to move those parts from that spot 10 ft away". Get real (Mr. King).

And that's $28 and hour + a benefit package the envy of most. You would be hard pressed to find the majority of "white collar, college educated executives" that earn that much - even though the union leaders always point to them as the problem. I know in my past professional life as an architect with lots of student loans, and high up the corporate ladder did I ever earn that kind of money. These people just never knew how damn good they had it.

Yea no BMWs, no Mercedes, no Audis, no Porsches made by those freaking union workers in Germany for me! Or any of that Union made junk from Germany for that matter. We just need to focus hard on getting shipping costs way way lower and get all these greedy costly labor jobs moved to China where they belong.
