Honda to 'outsmart' Toyota with a greener engine?

In 1973, junior engineer Takeo Fukui helped put Honda Motor Co. on the U.S. map with a Civic subcompact that met clean-air standards without a $1,000 tailpipe filter known as a catalytic converter. He was 28.

Today, as Honda's chief executive officer, Fukui, 61, is racing to repeat his triumph at a lab 68 miles (109 kilometers) north of Tokyo. There, engineers are building a diesel engine for 2009 that Honda says will meet both new U.S. limits and more stringent California rules on soot and nitrous oxide emissions and still use 30 percent less fuel than gasoline models.

Honda allows no media visitors to the lab. Fukui is guarding it as his secret weapon as U.S. gasoline prices soar to an average $2.87 a gallon and global warming worries 62 percent of Americans, a March Gallup Organization Inc. poll found.

I am in awe of the myth of Global Warming and how it can influence. What a bunch of crap!! There is no such thing. They are developing this because of higher gas prices. It was nice of the person to interject his beatnick opinion into the artical though.

Honda is a very resourceful company, they spend by far and away more on research and developement as a percentage than any Japanese car company. I would be interested to see how "Clean" the new diesel is. The new age ones out there now are pretty darn clean for an internal combution engine. It will be interesting to see how they match up. Come on Honda lay the cards out there and lets see what you have.

Yep, I remember the coming ice age! Not sure about the global warming crap and natural cycles. We really probably have no real clue.

Toyota has more efficient cars than Honda!I was unimpressed with honda's fuel consumption compared with toyota.I am not a scientist but the world is getting warmer!Fish are disapearing at an alarming rate on the west coast of Canada!Sounds great this honda engeneer is doing his homework.I saw some guy on TV that converted his ford escort to run on hydrogen without high preashure fuel tanks.Nothing complex but he drove 100km on 4 ounces of water (converted to hydrogen)Now that is cutting edge!He is just a back yard mechanic! Why can't these other INTELIGENT engeneers figure it out?

I am tired of my money going to lunatics in other countries (and this includes the ones in Canada. j/k).

By creating more efficient cars we reduce pollution in general reguardless of whether or not global warming is caused by us, or scientists. I never heard any scietist say, more pollution = a healthier planet.

no need to apologize for trying to correct the IDIOTS who THINK global warming is just a myth.

if they persist in thinking so, maybe they should move to New Orleans or other low lying coastal areas that will increasingly become more subject to storm surges. and hurricanes and tropical storms of increasing numbers and severity, due to all the HEAT ENERGY needing to be dissipated from the warming oceans.
maybe they ought to look at the charts of concentrations of C02 measured at the Mauna Loa Observatory, in the MIDDLE of the pacific, far from all the factories and other sources of C02 and other greenhouse gases we're constantly spewing out.

maybe they should ask whatever HAPPENED to the little ice age we SHOULD be having about now, according to the Milankovich Cycle of periodic ice ages. maybe, just maybe, it has been OVERWHELMED by the greenhouse effect, from all the greenhouse GASES we've generated over the past 150 years?

yeah, all this global warming stuff is just be a FIGMENT of their (SEVERLY LIMITED) imagination.

Earth is the hottest it has been in at least 400 years, possibly even longer

So the earth has benn hotter than this before. Netural Cycle or Global Warming.

Back to honda saving the world with its potentially efficient engine...There is technology that exists that any backyard mechanic/engine builder can convert there existing car gas or diesel to hydrogen, derived from water with no ballard fuel cell or high preashure tanks!Google hydrogen powered cars!!!It's been done and it works.

You are right Johnny there is another alternative to gas & diesel.Water/hydrogen if read the blog above you would have seen the light! googled water powered car!Cant wait til it hits the market! Why would you think the brits are smarter than the AMERICANS? Look at the British car's,they are crap!Did I mention $$$$ If Honda does make this engine more efficient than Toyota or chevy this will be a first!
