Does First On Race Day Influence Your New Car Purchase On Monday?

As a motorsports fan, Vicki Miller will drive hundreds of miles to watch a race, but her love of the sport also translates into her choice of vehicle.

Miller was at the Homestead NASCAR track this month to see Grand-Am series racing and to cheer on a new two-car team being fielded by South Korean brand Kia.

A longtime driver of Ford and General Motors vehicles, Miller chose a Kia Soul as her latest purchase partly because the brand has gotten involved in motor sports. "I looked at a Ford Fusion and a Mazda3, but in the end I went for the Soul, because it's so much fun to drive," said Miller. "And I love that Kia is racing in the Grand-Am series."

Interesting. I would believe some of you might consider that racing is bettering the breed by constantly challenging the limits and fostering innovation.

After all:

Seat belts, windshield wipers, disc brakes, fuel injection all were all born from competition.

Without it we would all still be driving technically obsolete vehicles.

A lot of people wouldn't answer that question honestly. It's like asking, "did you buy that because you're susceptible to advertising?" Shamelessly, I'll admit that in the 80's, I thought Group B rally was the greatest racing spectacle on earth and got suckered into liking Audi. It just kinda stuck.

Problem is a lot of these cars are so removed from their stock bretherend that they have no appeal to me when making a car purchase. If I removed all the tech, sensors, airbags, etc. and installed a lightweight roll cage in my car, I'd be faster without adding any power. Throw on a set of lightweight wheels and even better.

Nowadays with all the aerodynamic kits, stripped down interiors, insane powertrain upgrades that you would NEVER come close to seeing anything similar in a real car, it's easy to not buy based on racing.
