By 2015, the federal government will only buy hybrids, says Obama
President Barack Obama, in his speech on U.S. energy policy at Georgetown University, said that by 2015, the federal government will only buy hybrids, electric vehicles and other alternative-fuel vehicles. He also said that the U.S. will undertake plans to team up with private companies that seek to upgrade their fleets by using alternative-fuel vehicles. Currently, the government operates over 600,000 fleet vehicles.

Does that include his Limo and Air Force One?

"Does that include his Limo and Air Force One?"

- Why should it? Do you know of any Hybrid 747 Jets that are available out there to use? I'm also unaware of any Bullet-Proof Hybrid Vehicle available that would be fast enough to get away in a hurry. Those armored vehicles weigh like 10,000 lbs.

I guess since Obama is trying to get on some sort of stupid Hybrid mission, he's all of a sudden supposed to invent hybrid jets? What next? You demand that the white-house use Hybrid Lawn-Mowers? Can you see the flaw to your logic?

No it does not.The Secret Service will not allow the use of hybrid vehicles for escape situations and reliability. The armour and communications complexities also would prohibit the use of the vehicles.

Until they find out program is invented to shut down electric vehicles. Would make it way to easy for the idiots who want to kill the important people. Just saying.

Is ethanol part of the deal?

It pollutes more than conventional engines...
- Yes, it lowers reliance on foreign fuel
- Yes, it allows engines to perform better than higher-octane fuel

But really... We're going to let Iowa caucuses continue to influence us?!

I am not sure how to take you reply WorldofLuxury; I know that there are some that will preach on the fact that Ethanol helps break our dependance on foreign oil. My take is that Ethanol should not even be in the mix, it has caused substantial inflation in our food prices due to its large demand on corn which has then taken from the farmers that need that same corn to raise cattle for food and such. Not to mention when I put it in my F-150 4x4 I lost a substatial amount of fule economy. I averaged 14mpg on regular gas and on two seperate occasions I put E-85 in it and both times my Average could not get above 8mpg. I have to note too the I drive conservative and did make a serious attempt on getting real fuel economy. If you look at this alone I lost almost 50% efficiency and I have talked to many others with these same claims. So to me these two factors alone make it irrelevant to use. Then you touched on the fact that it is dirtier to produce as well and from a farming stand point very hard on the top soil to produce more corn just to break dependance on foreign oil. Just my Two Cents though.

@ leroisF40.
The big problem in the U.S. is that ethanol is produced from corn, as you say, pushing up food prices. In other parts of the world, Brazil for example, ethanol is produced from sugar cane, being cheaper to grow and producing 4 times the amount of ethanol per acre. When you see the decline in the world for sugar, by evidence of the sugar cane fields laid to waste in Hawaii, and many other parts of the world, it would not have an effect on food prices, and would bring back jobs to areas that are at present suffering through high unemployment. Also there is now a lot of research going into finding other substances like algae to produce ethanol, some of which is showing very promising results.
In my humble opinion though, hydrogen is going to be the fuel of the future.

where do you get hydrogen from? Almost all of the hydrogen produced to date cames from petroleum hydrogen cracking processes.

imo biofuels is the way to go. The latest biofuel technologies can use barren waste land and sea water and produce many times more fuel per acre then even sugar cane.

In Sweden, and I believe France, they are producing hydrogen by passing an electric current (supplied by a wind generator) through water, this produces both hydrogen and oxygen. Therefore, zero pollution.

Just thought of a great way to solves 2 problems! Demolish all the foreclosed homes, thereby increasing the value of remaining properties, then use the vacant land to grow the raw material for biofuel. - Housing market and reliance on oil sorted in one fell swoop!

I agree on the whole ethanol leroisF40. I have found a couple of gas stations that do not have 10% ethanol and my car runs better and gets better gas mileage.

And replace him with who? Sarah Palin? Rush Limbaugh? Obama is ripe for the picking but the republicans haven't got a single viable candidate. Obama will be around for a while. Get used to it.

Lets get rid of Obama and put in a republican that will re-implement the same "trickle down' crap that doesn't work. The republican idea to fix everything is to give more money to rich people and corporations in the form of tax breaks, and then cut out most of the programs that benefit the middle class.

Anyone who makes under $250,000 per year and considers themselves a republican is a fool who votes against their own best interests.
