Forward collision warning systems!

One thing that we've noticed a bit of a change in is safety technology. Rather than focusing on keeping passengers inside the car safe, it appears that tech is starting to focus on external issues -- granted, that also aides in keeping passengers safer.

Recent research by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has also pointed to forward collision warning systems being a big help when reducing pedestrian crashes. Although Consumer Reports notes that there are currently 19 models that have some sort of active collision warning system, the all-new 2011 Volvo S60 is the first vehicle to feature "pedestrian detection," which uses radar to "see" people.

That's the same S60 that ran over a mannequin during a press demonstration of said system, right? And similar to the Benz system that during a press demo on two S-classes resulted in both S-classes running head on into each another? Until they're perfected these systems are lawsuits waiting to happen, only instead of the offending drivers getting sued it'll be the vehicle manufacturers and their much deeper pockets.
