Should Ads Like This Be Outlawed And Does ANYONE Believe This?
Now here's something that I think it's safe to say has been bothering the Agents for quite some time.

You know when you see an automotive advertisement and the brand usually has some hip music on the commercial, the car's doing some neat tricks or simply looks great, then there is a voiceover or writing that says something like "The FIRST ever 31 mpg + 305 hp V6 2011 Mustang."

Uh, what?!

31 mpg is a great figure, particularly when you consider it a muscle car with over 300 horsepower; however, the problem is that figure is hardly achievable unless you know EXACTLY how to drive it and manipulate the most of the vehicle.

Oh yeah, it is also a highway mpg figure. They don't mention that though.

With that said, we want to know:

Why do they insult people's intelligence? And should they be sued for not disclaiming clearly that 99 percent of planet Earth won't get even close ?

By the way, Ford isn't the ONLY manufacturer guilty of using ad tactics like these.

You make it sound like Ford had a hand in determining the 31mpg hwy figure. Maybe you should go after the EPA for making the car companies put it on the window stickers. This is shlock journalism.

@Airliner

Considering I've gone on the record about recent Ford products I found exciting (Explorer) I think that's not the problem.

Stay on topic. This is about auto advertisements that ONLY cite highway MPG.

What you guys are missing is that the EPA tests are likely easy to manipulate. I doubt many V6 'Stang owners are getting upwards of 30 mpg. Probably because they aren't hypermiling the things.

Dear Agent00R,

Pardon me for sounding like a silly Fan Boy with my original comment... but asking me to stay on topic? Really?

Regardless of how 99% of drivers will drive their 300hp car (any car/any manufacturer) if the manufacturer lies about what could be achieved, usually the competition cries bloody murder through outlets that don't lead back to them. But really... Is is at all probable?? Most Toyota Prius owners don't get advertised MPG numbers... actually most people, at least the followers that read this page rarely, if ever, get their car's advertised MPGs, should they/we cry bloody murder?

Again pardon me for my Fan Boy like statement... It was a silly answer to what sounded like, Whining. Most of your readers here gather how automobile manufacturers advertise MPGs. No need for the silly Spoiler Alert. Next time you ask your audience to stay on topic, please realize that we aren't responding to an article in Reader's Digest. Usually, people who frequent this site know a thing or two about the industry... give us some credit. Ford isn't insulting anybody's intelligence, at least not with the Mustang's MPG statement.

Impressive, and what manufacture would advertise the city mpg? My civic doesn't get the advertised fuel consumption, the best HWY I have ever gotten is 6.4L/100km not the 5.7L/100km, and yes all auto manufacturers advertise like this, and yes 31mpg is very impressive for the hp this Mustang is getting, name another that gets close to this.

@truckman

Well, let's see the Corvette has more power and gets 26 mpg. Relatively speaking, it's just as impressive.

Yawn, this isn't anything like the Camaro advertisements in canada stating it gets 42mpg

lol, the Canadian MPG is non resistant, and yes you are right — Joe_Limon
it does say that, the non existent Canadian gallon is larges than the American gallon, that is why it sounds so good, and the Camero does sound impressive for power and economy, maybe someone has to do a head to head in economy and HP comparison. In this video this Mustang was getting maybe 10mpg. I like the L/100km, that way there can't be any fudging between the larger Canadian gallon, I used to hate the Liter thing...but now I find it more useful.

It's not a gallon conversion. If you convert canadian to american gallons they are still claiming 35mpg.

The "law" of advertising and the common law affords them something called PUFFING, 00R so you won't win in a court of law. The court of opinion says they can and will get away with it for those not informed. There is a deliberate attempt to manipulate numbers and if you notice the wording carefully, they are intentionally, generally vague or ambiguous, they need clarification or a disclaimer. Any car maker knows they can be sued for false advertising so they will bend not break the law to make a profit. If they told you the whole truth and nothing but, you might spend your dollars elsewhere, And they can allow that. Caveat emptor!

Oops, they CANNOT allow that!!

Even if they achieved those numbers on ONE fine summer day, with ideal humidity, ideal winds, ideal car, ideal driver, ideal everything and that number was achieved only ONCE this century, they are allowed to claim those numbers. They can say "...see? We did it!" Not "..see? We got lucky" Sad, but true! Buyer beware!

Spy before you buy! Now where have I heard that before???

Here's a fun car that will get 31 mpg on road trips. We need more ads like this, not less.

Remember, we have a whole driving generation now that doesn’t know what a sports car is and are used to the crap handling, performance, and hundred dollar fill-ups that come with the offroad fad.

Your whining about advertisements? They get approval for the numbers from the government agencies, so why not go after them so they can make manufacturers more accurate and honest?

It's the same as when they advertise the car for $15,999.99. Just so it sounds better than saying $16,000.

Are you saying they should have 3 different commericals:
1) for the sports enthusiast who wants a muscle car where it gets 20mpg
2) the daily driver who wants a sporty coupe and gets 25mpg
3) the hyper-miler who is out to prove to the world he can get 32mpg

Give me a break, it's advertising and if it gets people in the showroom to make their own opnions about the car then they have done their job. Think of the annoying GEICO ring tone "ringidy ding ding ding dong, ring ding da ding ding dong." It was so obnozious is became a sensation and GEICO even let you download it from their site. It's all about driving traffic weather it be to showrooms, websites, etc. Higher traffic sells more product.

Take a basic Marketing class and get back to me.

Sure it's a little misleading, but if the commercial shows the car traveling at 55MPH on a level road while flashing 31 MPG, that's not exactly a lie is it?

I can show an indicated 40+mpg on the fuel economy gauge in my BMW by easing off of the throttle on a level ground to where I can hold my speed long enough to show it.

Jesus ... but let's be frank, the Mustang is pretty frugal for a car with the horsepower it delivers.

NOW, I've driven the 2011 for 2 weeks as a rental.

My average that week was around 19 driven in a pretty '' civil '' way

31 on the Highway, limiting myself at around 50 MPH, yeah definitly doable but then again, it was doable on my 1987 Cadillac Fleetwood D'Elegance
