SPIED: 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK 63 AMG Caught, But What's Under The Hood?
And just when you thought AMG was done revealing new products, they spit out another. Or two. Possibly three.

Currently undergoing development is the AMG variant of the soon-to-be-released SLK hard-top convertible. Sporting the predictable, large intakes, a big brake kit with drilled rotors and a quad-tipped exhaust, it has all of the street credentials of an AMG product.

But there is one looming question: what's under the hood?

Some have speculated that the new twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8 could be powering the SLK AMG but realistically, like previous generation models, it would have to be detuned for marketing purposes. It might be tough to sell the next-generation SLK AMG if it were to have the same power output. According to TeamSpeed, it is possible that AMG could be working on a twin-turbo V6 powerplant.

Given that the new naturally-aspirated six cylinder makes around 300 horsepower, that could be a nice starting point for AMG.

What say you, Spies?

Teamspeed spies have caught another set of pictures of the new AMG version at Germany’s challenging Nürburgring race circuit: the SLK 63 AMG!

In the pictures you will spot the quad-tip exhaust, sportier wheels and tires and cross drilled brake rotors. We can also see a deeper air inlet in the lower fascia...

I think the NA 5.5 V8 is the confirmed engine. Probably with around 400 horsepower would be my guess.

So really you mean SLK 55 AMG, right?

Why would it have to be detuned? and tough to sell if it had the same power output as the CLS 63 amg and the rest...? 400kw, i think sales will be easy!

The problem is that it would cannibalize SL500 and SL63 sales because that powerful of an engine in that small of a car would mean crazy performance that not even an SL63 could match. Just like Porsche would NEVER put a powerful engine in a Boxster due to cannibalization of 911 sales and BMW always put the weaker in the 3 Series station wagons (with the exception of the occasional M3 station wagon) to avoid taking from 5 series station wagon sales.

It would be a ludicrous stretch to call anything "63" if it had only a turbo V6 - how stupid do they think consumers are? It's bad enough the engine is a 5.5 litre and nowhere near 6.3, but to then have two completely different engines share the same 63 moniker would truly be jumping the shark.

Maybe "SLK53" would make more sense. An AMG manufactured twin turbo V6 would be killer! Great efficiency with more than enough power for a lightweight like the SLK? I hope it happens. But I doubt it. Likely, it's the NA version of the new 5.5 with direct injection technology at 400+ HP.
