OUCH! Consumer Reports Slams New Jetta As A Shadow Of The Former Model
Top-notch consumer magazine Consumer Reports has given a very negative review to the 2011 North American VW Jetta.

"The new Jetta is unimpressive. In an effort to bring the car's starting price down, VW cheapened the previous Jetta's interior and suspension, making it less sophisticated and compromising handling."

Just read the Car and Drive comparison, where the new Jetta finished 5th out of 5. "The Lows" quote from C&D, "Outside looks like 2 generation old Camry. Inside looks like a 2 generation old Cavalier".

Trouble when you're compared to a Cavalier.....but really is anyone surprised?

So it's built in Mexico to save money and it still is lagging the competition?

Looks like VW can't compete with the japanese in terms of a price to quality ratio.

Either that of the quality was so far higher than the Japanese that the new one seems to be more mainstream.

I spent some time looking at a few of the new Jettas the other day and I left with this distinct impression. "Japanese econo-box"

Which was a decided let down from the prior model. And a decided let down for Volkswagen.

So instead of remaining German they made it Korean?

And you also posted earlier that the new Jetta, even though dumbed down, was still competitive. If you consider last place competitive then that's interesting.

"A deliberately under engineered German car is comparable to it's Japanese competition." that is what you said...

Love the new Avatar! It reminds me of the old one that you did, really quite a compliment. :)

I don't really know, but it doesn't really matter to me which country of origin it came from. I just know that the Jetta came in last.

I just can't believe how many people buy them because that front end is ugly with that weird grill and odd shape headlights. I wouldn't even waste my time seeing what the inside is like because it can't be that good

VW did it because they were priced too high for the previous models. They will continue to offer the Jetta in this decontented state unless sales start to tank. At that point they can always add back in the IRS(which is on the GLI) and the upmarket interior which is on the GLI and the Euro Jetta. What's interesting is that VW's Passat replacement built in Tennesee has IRS and a better interior. It will be offered starting at 20 grand. Further VW said if sales go well they will put these items back into the Jetta in 2013.As for the 2.5 engine it has never been known for it's smoothness. As for styling this is totally subjective. I like the sharper edged styling of the Jetta where I do not like the "swoopy" styling of say a Hyundai Elantra.Yes it is conservative but for an economy sedan it's fine.My point is that Consumers Reports complaint about the Jetta is really somthing that would be an easy fix if VW decides to do it. As for Car and Drivers comparison I'd either go with a Focus SE with the manual tranny or spring for a Susuki Kisashi over the rest of the crop.

The only reason people buy this car so muchnis because it leases great, the car is an unreliable pos!!! I think the last 3 models now have been going down in design (exterior) more and more. Onenthing I do give It is that I think it's comfortable for a compact but no way would I purchase that cheap unreliable junk that's getting worse and worse every model change...

And this is what someone else said about it:

"VW cheapened the previous Jetta's interior and suspension, making it less sophisticated and compromising handling...handling agility and cornering grip now fall short, as does the finish inside the formerly impeccable interior...."

Now I expect you to post something bad about another car to deflect attention away from this story.

Surprisingly new Jetta sales are up.

The new Jetta is the best-looking Jetta ever made. It's handsome and sporty-looking in a conservative way. I like it. And the interior isn't as bad as some people here make it out to be. It's a solid, well-made cabin that's really no different from any of its rivals.

I don't give a damn what that joke of a publication called Consumer Reports has to say about the Jetta. Neither do I care what BMW and Driver, excuse me, Car and Driver has to say about the Jetta. Performance enthusiasts don't buy these cars. The Jetta will be bought by average people with good income looking for something conservative yet a bit more stylish in its class.

Did you ever wonder why Native Americans struggle in main stream North America while people from east Asia tend to excel here? Genetically they're pretty much the same...

In 1491, American population was 100% Asian (Native American). Back then it was populated by happy people and unpolluted land. There was no gap between rich and poor as everyone shared equally. Perhaps all the Europeans should be repatriated?

Also, did you ever think about how corporations and greed (not non-white people) have created the inability for a single-income family to afford a house and new car? Can you blame non-white people for the concentration of wealth and disparity? Absolutely not.

Not only are you a bad scientist, you are also a lousy sociologist.

I have had several Audi's and since then a Passat 3.6 4 motion a CC 3.6 4 Motion and 3 GTI's latest is a 2011. All have been very reliable and great cars, the latest GTI is amazing, refined fast precise and just great to drive and I am getting 24 mpg and up to 28 on a decent journey. But they gave me a new Jetta SE loaner a couple of months back and I hated it. The whole interior is hard plastic and feels cheap. I guess the fact that they are selling so well indicates that VW's market research was on the money, that dumb Americans will buy something just because it is cheap?? Good at least that the GLI will have the IRS and a better interior. At the end of the day if you want a German car you should buy one (made in Germany. I remember when Mercedes introduced the M class made in USA, it got a bit of a slating due to its build quality.
