Will The Mercedes-Benz A-Class SHAKE Up The Premium Compact Car Segment?
Now that Mercedes-Benz has shown its cards with the Concept A-Class, it seems that the initial buzz is positive. And given that the entry-level premium compact class is growing with likes of the Audi A3, BMW 1-Series and Lexus CT200h, it looks like Mercedes may be a little late to the game.

However, I wouldn't conclude that yet since Benz didn't quite capture the market with the C-Coupe Kompressor from the early 2000s. Didn't want to make that mistake again with a car that looked a bit awkward -- that's putting it nicely.

Armed with sharp looks, a turbocharged four-cylinder motor and a dual-clutch transmission, things are sounding good for the A-Class. Now let's see what makes it to production, since these are all expensive pieces.

Mercedes-Benz's press release follows:

The Mercedes-Benz Concept A-Class will make its debut at both the 2011 New York and Shanghai Auto Shows later this month. Looking as though it might have come from another planet, the Concept A-Class features an expressive and athletic design. Technical highlights include a new turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine, a dual clutch transmission and a radar-based collision warning system with adaptive Brake Assist.

The aggressive appearance of the Concept A-Class, with its long hood, low silhouette and slim side windows, is given depth by the interplay between lines and surfaces. Inspiration was drawn from the wind and the waves, as well as aviation engineering.

The Concept A-Class previews a new compact class era at Mercedes-Benz. This front-wheel drive model is powered by a four-cylinder gasoline engine from the new M270 series. It was designed for transverse installation and thanks to direct injection and turbocharging, offers high performance together with minimal emissions and fuel consumption. The Concept A-Class is equipped with the twoliter variant of the new engine, developing 210 hp. This BlueEFFICIENCY engine is mated to the new Mercedes-Benz dual clutch transmission.

As a world first in the compact class, the concept car features a radar-based collision warning system with adaptive Brake Assist, which lowers the risk of rearend collisions. This assistance system gives a visual and acoustic warning to an inattentive driver and prepares Brake Assist for a precise braking response. Braking is initiated as soon as the driver forcefully operates the brake pedal.

Defined edges and a free interplay with the body surfaces

The exterior design of the Concept A-Class features the combination of defined edges and free interplay with the body surfaces that Mercedes-Benz first showed in the F800 Style. The side view is structured with three prominent lines: the front structural edge above the front fender forms a dropping line, while the prominent shoulder muscle above the rear axle underlines the car's coupe-like character. A further line extends upwards from the rear wheel arch in a sweeping curve.

The front end of the Concept A-Class immediately catches the eye with the Mercedes- Benz star logo surrounded by what looks like a star-filled sky. Where there are usually openings or louvers, the radiator grille consists of numerous metallic silver hexagons on black stems. This theme is reflected in the design of the wheels. The headlights of the Concept A-Class continue this design element with innovative full-LED high-performance headlamps repeating the starry sky motif with numerous light points. The daytime running lamps consist of 90 optical fibers with aluminum sleeves which are arranged in a wing-shape within the headlamp.

In the interior, the eye is immediately drawn to the dashboard which has the shape of an aircraft wing and a translucent, stretchable fabric lining. This enables the bionic, cellular structure of the dashboard to remain visible.

The shape of the air vents in the dashboard is reminiscent of a jet aircraft. The prominent dials in the instrument cluster are in red, inspired by the afterburner of a jet engine. The center console is designed as a modern flight control panel, with the shift lever designed as a "reverse thrust control".

A smartphone is fully integrated into the Concept A-Class. All functions are shown in the display as applications, and can be operated using the rotary/push control. The visual presentation of the display screen elements is unique, with a deep, three-dimensional appearance created by laser-like magenta-colored lines.

if they extended the wheelbase further and thereby shortening the front overhang, im sure they could further maximize the cabin of the 3 door hatchback

otherwise it looks quite slick especially the massive grille and headlight combo

First Mercedes exterior design I've liked in a while.

If it remains true to concept, looks like a winner.

The interior is reminiscent of previous Audi concepts in this sector including the recently previewed Audi A3 Concept in Geneva. First LED lighting and now Audi look alike interiors. You know as the saying goes regarding the "best form of flattery."

Only problem is that Audi wishes it was that good!

Ahh VISO...relates everything to vw/audi LOL. Just solidifies his delusional state. The interior in the concept A3 looks real BAD, and by bad I mean CHEAP.

I actually like this A-class concept. The styling looks good inside and out.

Nope, I'll take a Focus ST 4dr. It is production ready and not some outlandish concept that will look nothing like the real thing. Not to mention it will probably cost just as much as a C class once optioned appropriately.

Just a tad premature in that assessment aren't you??

Not really. The 1-series for BMW debuted and was basically replaced the now elongated 3-series coupes. The 1 also replaced the missing price point of the 3.

I'm still trying to figure out where these luxury brands are going to fit in terms of price points for the compact segment. I realize Ford and others haave cars coming that will be just below or a tad above (optioned out) $30k that are geared more towards people wanting higher performance or more upscale appointments. But are we expecting an Audi A1 or A Class or whatever the suv BMW (i-series) to come in and start their pricing in the low 20's and be fully equipped for $30k for a hair above?

I just don't see it as they now have you paying almost $40k for their entry level sedans. I must have a different idea of pricing than most but for me I'd rather have a performance hatch like the upcoming ST than a quasi-luxo-mini.

Front is overwrought (in how many directions travels the outline of the headlamps?!); the side creases do look good under the right light and at the right angle, otherwise they can also look busy.

The only part of the car that is strikingly Teutonic is the rear (notice how much cleaner it is compared with the other parts). Ironically, this same rear looks like an Audi.

Hope production model doesn't get those headlights. They are very bland and also a big grille with big grilled bumpers look odd in such a small car. Complete front end is poor IMO.

Okay its starting to grow on me... It looks very slick. I just dont see how this has anything to do with being a Merc.
