2011 Volt has a range of 1,000 miles, first customers say
A group of early customers of General Motors Co.’s Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid revealed that they can travel 1,000 miles (about 1,600km) before they need to fill up the gas tank, Tony Posawatz, the company’s vehicle line director for the Volt, stated at a conference in New York. The vehicle model initially runs on batteries and once the charge drops, it switches to a gasoline-powered electric generator. Such great mileage

It's not one 1,000 mile trip.

Come on people. There's nothing strange about this. It means that these early adopters fit the designed driving profile and rarely drive beyond the electric range. If they never exceeded the battery's range, they could likely go 5000 miles. Since the engine runs occasionally even if you never deplete the battery, it's going to use some gas, so unlimited miles can't be achived.

1000 miles, especially with the tiny tank the Volt has, is very impressive. I know of many VW diesels that can reach that, but with much larger tanks and a coresponding higher fuel cost. I see this as confirming GM's initial mileage claims. Good job.

Looks like the Volt is the right car at the right time for GM.

if i drove the car only 40 miles a day, and then plugged it in when I am home, I could probably go 1000 miles on a tank of gas too...but i still only got 300 miles on the tank of gas, the rest was battery miles.

but i drive currently 25 miles each way to work, so on my way home my battery would kick in assuming I didn't do any driving around during the day, which I typically do. In my situation I would not get that type of great mileage out of it, plus in the midwest it can be 30 degrees in the morning and then 80 degrees in the evening, which would also effect the battery life.

sounds like GM designed a perfect car for San Diego and people who only travel short distances a day.

"so on my way home my battery would kick in" - meant to say "so on my way home the battery would run out, my gas engine would kick in"

Hmmm, where have the haters now, filling up with four buck gas? Well done GM.

Right if you take 20 seconds to 60.
