Like Father, Like Son - The New M5 Concept, Does It Look Too Conservative?

Like Father, Like Son - The New M5 Concept, Does It Look Too Conservative?
Although I find the new BMW M5 Concept to be a piece of automotive pornography, I have spoken with a handful of enthusiasts and the reaction has been relatively mixed.

Some find it to be like sex on wheels and perfect while others have mentioned it looking too conservative and subtle.

I don't think there's anything subtle about that front valence but hey, different strokes for different folks.

Clearly, this vehicle takes a page from the E39 M5's book, which was largely a simple-looking sport sedan. Besides the mirrors, quad exhaust pipes and some other slight cosmetic modifications, it wasn't that much different than the standard 530i and 540i.

This meant the people who knew the vehicle understood how badass it was while others dismissed it as "just another BMW." How wrong they were!

With that said, weigh in: is the all-new BMW M5 Concept too much of a sleeper for you or is it BMW doing what it does best?

Many have said that the F10 M5 makes an impression closer to the E39 M5 than the immediately preceding E60 M5, by ditching the E60's more avant garde lines and styling for the more direct and linear lines of the E39 generation. To us, this observation certainly has some merit, as borne out by the photo comparison below. To our eyes, the concept F10 M5 seemingly occupies the space between the E39 and E60 iterations - toning down the at-times controversial E60's curvacious and nontraditional cutlines, but adding more flow and dynamic surface changes to the E39's more classic upright design...

How is that following the same path? What other sedan has a 550+hp ttV8 with a 7 speed DCT, and carbon fiber body parts, along with other features yet to be released?? KERS would add weight not reduce it that is why BMW kept it off. Plus all of the other cars in this segment are even more closely aligned with their lesser production models.

"This is what happens when you have a bean counter like Segler run M and not a true enthusiast like his predecessor Gerhard Richter."

What happened? it is not fully unveiled yet, its never been reviewed.

You are jumping to conclusions prematurely on hypothetical what ifs.

Anyways back to the article.
The e39 is classic and timeless.
The F10 IMO looks great. Very dynamic and more exotic than its predecessors. I think the E39 and F10 are the two best looking M5s to date.

These banglized designs are "winning" but like the actors I prefer the father.

L-shaped taillights have been around on Bimmers for quite awhile.

LOL.I'm to sure what you expect. The M5 would still be the first with all of these features. BMW cant control what the other companies produce, and assure what they produce will remain unique...that's just not realistic. Other companies can make cars that go as fast, but the M5 will most likely be the most focused, and enthusiast orientated. If you look back at all the previous AMG,M,and RS cars that's how it tends to play out, I doubt anything will change anytime soon.

I love the E 39 M5! Timeless sexiness that is shared by the new one IMO.

I've noticed even from a visual perspective the M's are getting more mellow before you never had to wonder if what you saw was a M you could tell from a mile away now you have to look for little details like the exhaust or the badging on the side. It sometimes looks like they are trying to hide the fact that is a M. Specifically that new M3 obviously I haven't seen this one(M5) in person but I hope I comes across better in person.

This dull look does not match M5 badge. There is no better stance, swagger than the previous gen M5's. BMW needs to start M5 design first, then take things off for other 5-series models, not the other way around.

If you ever noticed previous 2-3 generations of M5 on the street, there were respects from other drivers, not this one IMO. Look at cars like Aston Martin, Maserati, there are noticeable cues all over, this M5 is not recognizable, pity for folks willing to pay top dollars for such a great car from such reputable pedigree. BMW 5-series needs a design overhaul, same as the new 6-series.

I must say I could not afford that car but if I could I would want it to look like the crazy amount of money I know it will cost and the crazy performance I know it will have. I've noticed Mercedes does that even though in my opinion M is more respected than AMG or at least sales more. If looks doesn't matter then they might as well see how fast they can make a Suzuki SX4 go even though that an exaggerated example I think it gets the point across.

I dont follow your logic... Some people like sleeper luxury sedans with mega performance, and dont need over the top styling to feed their ego by onlookers gawking.

Why must we continue to cater to "...while others dismissed it as "just another BMW?" Those are not buyers. They sit in a basement with their coloring books all day daydreaming!

Have them try to buy a Saleen S7 then! Or any number of die cast options!

"The New M5 Concept, Does It Look Too Conservative?"

NO! It's supposed to look that way -- a model that only the discerning eye will detect as not being the regular 5er. Not, "...looky here, looky here! Can you see me now?"

The previous generation of BMWs were slammed for being unattractive (the 5 comes to mind) or dissonant (2020 model year 7 series) or boring (6 series). The "Flame Surface" styling language was a flop, and BMW knows it. They have decided to return to more traditional (conservative) designs.

In my opinion, the current generation of BMWs is more conservatively styled, but definitely not unattractive, as their predecessors. I suppose BMW can't make all the people happy all of the time.

Typo: "2020 model year" should read "2002 model year". I wish we had an "edit" button.

Personally the new A6 is not my cup of tea. So for me its the new M5 followed by the E63. This new M5 just plays the part so well, the design is very clean, and sporty with nice sharp lines. I honestly cant think of a thing i dont like about it. A total win for BMW!!! Now im just "patiently" waiting for the specs to be released.

Yeah, in my opinion, the new A6's front end has missed the mark entirely, and does not have the curb appeal of the new 5. Just my two cents.

The E39 is classic, and will go down as one of the best looking M cars ever.

IMO the new F10 is right up there with the E39 in terms of styling. If this is anywhere as good as the E92 dynamically with it 550hp V8 it will be devastating.

I was referring to the quality of work and attention to detail that BMW M put in to the M3, and that it remains at the top of its class well into its lifecycle.Meaning if BMW produces the same quality of engineering as the M3 the M5 will be devistating. It was not meant to be taken literally...

bmwM3 I know everyone has their preference what I'm saying is what mine is I prefer things to like like what they are it might not be your preference but to each his own. I know that the M3 won't look like lambo or the M5 look outlandish but they could definitely take that up a couple notches. But that's just my opinion...

Well its clearly to early to tell. For one the tech specs have not been released, and second It has not been reviewed. Jumping to conclusions is pointless. So we will just have to wait and see.

I personally have believe this car will be another incredible car by BMW M.

Trust me when I say this.. the F10 will be all great M5s into one. It will be a new standard setter like the E39, and E60 in their time.
