Will tC Sales Say SCION-ara Once The New Hyundai Veloster Hits Dealers?
Well, well. It looks like Agent 001 was up to his usual handiwork today when he came across some Hyundai Velosters today. According to 001, these are test mules being analyzed for modifications by aftermarket manufacturers.
Since the car photographed IN the garage is a pre-production vehicle, we've been told that the headlights and side view mirrors will not make it to production. Compare the Veloster in the garage to the very last shot, which features the production headlights and let us know what you think:
Are the production headlights up to spec OR should Hyundai use the headlights from the car pictured IN the garage?

Is it cool to look at sure. And probably more road presence than it's competitors...but looking at it from a design point of view, I think this thing is so BUSY like some hollywood housewife undergoing way too many plastic surgery procedures.

I like it, the only thing that makes me question the sanity of it is 2 things
1 - Power Price Point - If this is a GTI/TC/SIR killer, Hyundai is aiming it at a 18K price-point which has the weaker TC at 180 horsepower, Hyundai rolled out the car with the Elantra's 138hp engine '' promising '' a performance version delivering 200 hp rumoured at around 22k which is GTI territory.
2 - Interior is just the one from the Elantra, anyone in a Hyundai showroom can see this, intial pictures were much more promising and this is a bit depressing considering what we were shown.
Now on the Scion front.
2012 brings a 2 door Boxer engine / Hybrid RWD coupe called the FT-86 and a car called the IQ.
Scion HQ also hinted at bringing in a smaller Hybrid RAV4 platform
Hyundai may own the moment, but beware the risphoenix rising from it's ashes
And don't underestimate Toyota, the LFA is proof enough

I think Hyundai did a really good job with this car. By the way I love the gauge, remind me of the one on the current Infiniti G37 sedan and coupe. Good job Hyundai.

Except the front fascia which is very bland and empty-looking, i like the rest of the design.

I'm getting tired of these headlights. Why do they feel the need to dumb down items like headlights and taillamps. HID and LED tech has come far enough along that it can be a cost-effective alternative to these standard bug-eye halogens. Just look at Europe, they adopted the projector beam with a sharp cutoff for reduced glare and better visibility than our standard which scatters light everywhere. I read a great article about headlamp tech the other day comparing Europe to the US in terms of regulations (see address below).
http://www.motivemag.com/pub/feature/tech/Motive_Tech_The_Difference_Between_US_and_European_Lights.shtml
If it is a problem of additional cost to a vehicle, I personally would pay for it. Give me a nice set of tasteful LED taillamps and HID projectors like the flat grey Veloster had at the reveal and I will gladly pay extra. The least manufacturers can do is offer it as an option.
I just hope that when the Ford Focus ST is debuted in the US, they don't dumb it down like they did the other models. The European Focus in Titanium trim and the one below (name?) get LED tails and projectors, no reason why we could not see the same on the premium model here, perhaps with LED DRL's as well.
Sorry for the bias, but I just wish we could move forward from our 1990's and early 2000's tech and get with the program.

I really don't care for the way all the Asian cars are making the lights (front and rear) bulge outside the flow of the sheetmetal. probably just a personal preference, but I like the light lenses to maintain the flow of the body lines. Toyota seems to be the worst of the offenders, but this Hyundai is right up there with them.

I've noticed this increasingly with Toyota's especially. I have seen the latest Highlander, Corolla, Camry refresh and I stare in awe each time I go by one on the highway. The clear plastic flares out from the car looking like a huge zit on its fascia. Whats even funnier is Toyota has taken to putting their turn signals in the middle area of the cars instead of at the sides.
What a horrid design to incorporate.

"Poor Quality cheap materials right down to the screws"? You are so wrong, this is not 1988.
You think Toyota/Honda for the same budget price point is better? I think you better start checking your surveys - you'll be surprised to discover that Hyundai has come a very long way to being directly competitive with anything Honda/Toyota puts out.

Dan Debore/Bedore/whatever (Hyundai's PR guy) went on twitter not too long after the NA Veloster launch and said that the HIDs and LED tail lamps would be made available, but the matte gray paint on the show car would not....how certain are you that the HID's WILL NOT be made available.
Yeah, I want HIDs on my Veloster (should I decide to have the lease on my Sonata bought out by the dealer and upgrade early). The elaborate projector/LED design perfectly matches the front end, whereas the reflector-type headlights look cheap in comparison.
Come on Hyundai, the kind of shoppers that you want to target with this car are keen on such details. As I mentioned in my other response, it's lame that you can get projectors/LED running lights/LED tail lights on the lowly Rio5 [2012 model], but not on the Veloster, Elantra, Tuscon, etc. In other words, the "modern premium" brand is skimping on the details that their lower end subsidiary puts on almost every one of their cars.

The wheels are very well done. The interior should be done over. The headlights are a bad copy of VW (Audi). People go for the warranty with the brand. And it will get cross shopped.

To me the car doesn't start well in the front but the back is a deal breaker. Should Scion be worried? yes! About this car? NOT AT ALL!!!

I like the design from some angles, but hate it from others . . . I need to see the car in person, but the design seems a little inconsistent.

That is f*****g ridiculous that those projector HIDs will not make it to production on the US spec vehicle! WTF Hyundai!?! Why is it that every other global market gets the HID headlights and LED tail lamps and we don't?!? I guess Hyundai thinks American shoppers are a bunch of penny pinching saps. It's bad enough that I spent $500 on decent looking KDM LED tail lights for my 2011 Sonata, and never will I do that again.
It's also pretty pathetic when your sister company, KIA, puts projectors, LED DRL's, and LED tail lights on the US market 2012 Rio5....

I'll be on the market for a small coupe in November, and as petty and fickle as this may sound, I wont even look as the Veloster unless they make HIDs, or even just projector beam halogens available. It won't be too much trouble for me to thrown in some xenon bulbs for the latter. Putting xenons in outdated reflector headlights, on the other hand, provides terrible lighting that blinds everyone in front of you, and begs for you to be pulled over by the police. Also, those projectors on the white car look 10x's than those crappy rubbish reflector headlights on the assumed to be production Veloster. And besides, the Tiburon had decent looking projector headlights. Just saying.
