Too Green? Homebuilt EV Charging Station Torches Family Home
Fire officials suspect an electric hybrid
car
may have sparked an overnight blaze in a garage in Barkhamsted on Center Hill Road.
Homeowner
Storm Connors and his wife, Dee, said they awoke to the sound of a smoke alarm around 4 a.m.
The couple said they have lived in the home for nearly 40 years. They built it and raised their children there, so when the flames took over their attached garage Thursday morning, burning it down to its beams, the couple started to panic. They said they were worried they were going to lose their home and the memories inside.

Come on 009. WHERE in that report did it say that the charging station was homebuilt? You can't claim ignorance forever pal. One of these days somebody beyond cyberspace is going to find you and sue your ass for slander. Let those who have ears to hear, hear. It's an unfortunate incident, but did anybody stop to think that perhaps the Suzuki Samurai parked next to the Volt could have caused the fire? The only "punishment" these people are facing is from morons like eldard who will be making these idiotic comments into the near future.

I just did some follow-up investigations. While the origin of the charging station is still unknown, that Samurai was in fact a homebuilt EV, converted by Connors. The Volt has over 2000 miles on it so it wasn't exactly just put in there. If he was using a 110v outlet to charge both EVs Connors may have been literally playing with fire and living on borrowed time. Frankly I could never see the point in running any heavy electrical device on 110v. 220v is the clear choice. Less power used and it's safer.
