NEW YORK AUTO SHOW PREVIEW: Nissan's Bringing The Versa & Infiniti Has A Trick Up Its Sleeve

Now after what we recently heard in the past week about the Nissan Versa and its Chinese cousin, the Sunny, having relations -- a.k.a. same car syndrome -- we weren't really expecting too much more from Nissan. Although, there is word trickling out that apparently its luxury division, Infiniti, is bringing a new family member to the party.

The question is: what could it be?

Given that the Essence Concept was given so much press, I'd assume it either has to be something related to that OR it could be an entry-level premium compact. Infiniti's lips remain tightly sealed with Carscoop reporting the car will be "a new luxury addition," which doesn't tell us...anything.

Any thoughts, Spies?


One by one, automakers are revealing their plans for the upcoming 2011 New York International Auto Show. This time we have news from Nissan and its luxury division Infiniti. Starting with Nissan, the Japanese firm will debut a “new compact sedan” and a “new, zero emission motorsports concept”. While we have don’t have any information yet on the concept study, from what we know, the compact sedan will be the next generation of the Versa that was teased in an official sketch back in late 2010...

It'll be one cold day in hell before I anticipate a Nissan Versa but the Infiniti part has me interested. They said the Etheara the car released at the Geneva show would be a new 30k entry level Hybrid but it seems kind of soon for that and they also talked about which direction they would go in building their new flagship either a conventional Sedan like a 7 series or a Sports car based off the Essence. Knowing Infiniti it's probably the ladder.

EARTH TO INFINITI - BRING MORE PRODUCTS TO YOUR LINEUP ASAP!!!! YOU DONT COMPETE IN ENOUGH CATEGORIES!!! HURRY ALONG!!! LOOK AT BMW... ALTHOUGH THEY COMPETE IN TOO MANY CATEGORIES, MAYBE YOU SHOULD AT LEAST MEET THEM HALFWAY.

My guess is that it is a concept based on the Nissan Leaf. Infiniti has had a Nissan Leaf based car in development for quite a while, but they have tested poorly in internal clinics (looked too much like a Leaf). Given the Nissan Essflow and Infiniti's sharpening of their design language, they may be ready to unveil a Leaf based offering.
