2011 Audi A8L vs. 2011 BMW 750Li vs. 2011 Jaguar XJL Supercharged - Car and Driver Showdown!

The ideal big car is a calm and reassuring presence, deliberate and proficient in motion and abundantly powerful. We’ve pulled three such candidates from the luxury-car class, all European—oh, excuse us, one is British—all stretched to the maximum available wheelbase, all with V-8 engines that’ll knock on 100 mph as softly as the knocking that awoke Stalin on Sunday mornings, and all with a base price of about 85 to 90 large.

Two of them, the Audi A8L and the Jaguar XJL, are constructed primarily of aluminum, while the BMW 750Li’s unibody is a mix of steel and aluminum. The Jag is only 164 pounds heavier than the new Chevrolet Camaro SS convertible despite being more than 17 feet long.

Even if winning this comparison garners Audi more foot traffic at their dealerships, people aren't going to be able to purchase an A8 without waiting 3 or 4 months anyways. Even the ones that my wife and I did see were already pre ordered and the dealerships wouldn't allow us to test drive any of them. The only cars Audi dealerships seem to stock and attempt to sell are base model A4's with 2.0 engines. In 20+ years in doing business with BMW and MB, I've never had such a frustrating time with a car company....it's as if Audi isn't really serious about selling cars.

the problem you have with Audi is supply. BMW and MB's top markets are the USA and for Audi we are the 4th largest market.

I would get mad ad the current administration for devaluing the US dollar so much that importers world rather sell cars in about any other country but here. Dollar cost averaging can only go so far and when a
company has supply issues they go where they make more money.

I was just on the Chinese website for Audi and the V8 A8L tops $208k for a V6 http://www.audi.com/cn/brand/en/models/a8/a8l/price.html

US sales are way up but Audi could be 2x as big in the USA if they just gave us more cars. Blame it on China. Several Audi, Porsche, BMW and other manufacturer models are in short supply.

BTW If you want an A8L i have about 10 available how many do you need? We ship all over the USA

I didn't read the article, but I am willing to bet the BMW won. They always do when BMW and Driv...whoops, excuse me, Car and Driver compare them to other cars.

Gremannut posted this, so the winner is Audi.

I would take the XJ.

Audi cars are overpriced slow pigs. Why does this article say it's quicker 0-60 than a 750? Bunch of nonsense right there.

It was the lowest priced car in the test...

the A8 was the lowest priced car
it is faster 0to60 then the 750 and it gets better mileage then the hybrids of it's market. This is before the 4.0T comes out in a few months (is more powerful and has better mileage)

But the BMW won when Motortrend did a review of these cars...who to believe!?!? Maybe just buy what you want...

Thats up to you. Any of them will make me happy....But definitely the Audi deserves the victory. BMW is lossing ground cause they are trying to hard to be a luxury car, as MB is trying too hard to become in an sport car, now they start to have almost the same specs in every aspect. Jaguar was lighter and has less gadgets and the most powerful engine so it was not a surprise that handles better. But in that category I think people buying that kind of car will take the Bimmer or the Audi, even the old S class is better as a luxury car. A luxury car needs to be quiet smooth and powerfull, in that sense I think the BMW and the Audi were the real Luxury cars there, the Jaguar fall in other category.

As some car magazines have compared these three before with different results, it just depends on your individual point of view of things, as it also has happened with the magazines itself. As someone said here, probably this might be the "seventh generation 7 series", but honestly we need to be thankful that Chris Bangle left BMW and His beluga whale looking design cars. It just depends on your particular point of view and also, as someone said "Maybe just buy what you want"
Unfortunately some people are wrong because how can it possibly be said that the XJ is the one of the three with less gadgets, that its interior quality is nowhere near the Audi or the rest of the compared models, or that it falls in other category?
For you to be able to find the level of craftsmanship found in the new XJ, I'm afraid that we need to focus in some higher levels like Bentley lets say. Gadgetry? Which of the models compared here have a dual view 8" TFT touch screen and WhiteFire® techonolgy, or weld less body construction, just rivets and glue (like in the aeronautical industry) just to mention a few of the new XJ attributes as there are too many. Again, is just a matter of personal taste, and I'm not saying that the other models in this comparison are not great luxury cars, but we need to be fair.

xjprou: I do agree with but partialy. I already try 7 S A8 and XJ and XJ feels excelent , specialy when we talk about upholstery (which "I" prefer over the other 2 upholstery), but the character of the Jag is more sport oriented than luxury oriented....again thats IMO....the car looks better to me but the rear seat is not what you spect in a limo, I am 6.3 so i know what I am saying, that is almost a CLS in the rear seat.

Yonder7: That's fair, there's so many things to take into consideration when buying a car, that's for sure, and your height and the way the car fills your needs is perfectly understandable. What's not fair is saying this and that even without seeing the real thing and to know what it has to offer!
Sportiness is what some other automakers are seeking to add it to its current luxury vehicles, apparently Jaguar is on the right tracks for this!
May I ask if you tried the LWB?

xjprou: Nope It was the short one, So may be when I try the LW I can Change my mind. And do not get me worng i love the new Jags, but "I" feel that it should offer something more oriented to the luxury in the XJ line. If we want Sport, then XFR is the one for me. The best option that I saw in the XJ is glass roof....outstanding.

No, as I said before your arguments are completely valid because you went to see the real thing and you have a clear perspective of the product itself, is not an aerial opinion of what you think it is. If you are considering buying a luxury car in the segment of the XJ, please do yourself a favor and take a look at the LWB XJ.-
Regards!

The A8 in this comparison was not that optioned out. Just look at the back seats lacking the integrated MMI. The ones I have seen are around $105 ro $110 load up. I can only imagine the price of the A8L W12 - at around $160,000 large.

most of the A8s we have are around 90-100k
