NEW YORK AUTO SHOW: Hyundai's Elantra DESTROYS Economy-Focused Compacts In Sales
Leave it AutoSpies' car of the year, the 2011 Hyundai Elantra, to make one of the biggest waves at the 2011 New York Auto Show. It wasn't because it was receiving an update or new exterior either.

Now it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that this car is simply everywhere. I have done plenty of driving a good amount the past several weeks and one thing is certain; there are tons of all-new Elantras being sold.

But Hyundai went and found some interesting data points. Although the Chevrolet Cruze is said to have sold approximately 50,000 units, it hasn't been too many of the ECO versions -- which is used to advertise the Cruze, thanks to the asterisk.

When comparing sales of the Elantra versus the Fiesta SFE package, Cruze ECO and Smart ForTwo, beats them all -- combined -- by six times. Yeah, six.

What is the category? The Fiesta is a competitor to the Accent which in it's current form is not anything special. The new one should prove to be A LOT more substantial in comparison.

Then the Smart-For-Two, something that would be more at home compared to say a Scion xD. I got lost in the comparison when there were three different categories. Sub-compact(S42), Compact(Fiesta), and Economy(Cruze/Elantra). Sorry, there is no sense made other than trying to compare to non-hybrid gas fuel sippers which in that case there are loads more cars to throw into this category. I'd tell Hyundai that while I like the Elantra, stick to comparing it to it's TRUE competition (Focus, Cruze, Civic, Corolla, Sentra).

From past experience, I would say $0

Where's the Corolla and Civic in all this ?

Why do they compare it to American/European models only and wtf does the Smart FourTwo have to do with the Elantra ????

Here are the real figures

It's just a bunch of marketing mumbo jumbo. The Elantra competes against the regular Cruze,Focus,Jetta etc.

I don't understand how the others posting here don't get the point the article is making. They are comparing sales of NON-HYBRID vehicles rated at/over 40mpg highway. Yes, the Corolla, Civic & the Focus (without the Super Fuel Economy package) may be more direct competitors in size/price, they don't compare in gas mileage.
