Do You Really Think The A-Class AMG GoingTo Really Be Able To Dethrone A M3 Or S4?
After years of watching Audi and BMW corner the segment for small road rockets, Mercedes and AMG are planning to steal the thunder from those S4s and M3s with a hot A-class that will boast 350 horsepower.

Mercedes unveiled a preview just before the opening of the Shanghai Motor Show. This unveiling was aimed squarely at the German manufacturer’s key target market, China. Compared to the staid design of the standard A-Class, the preview of this hot hatch makes even BMW’s M3 look staid. And with the rumored 350 horsepower mill, it will surely leave competitors straining to keep pace.

I was going to ask who on earth would consider an A class a 3-Series or A4 competitor (and as such the AMG version an M3 or S4/RS4 competitor) but then I saw the article came from BenzInsider.com. That explains it.

This is a really good looking car. It will be priced as an entry-level premium product. Not in the same league as an M3 or RS4. But a little hotrod it could be though!

First S4 to M3, even the most ardent Audi fan would put the M3 against the RS.

350 HP, not like the 1 M 335 bhp with overboost to 380 bhp (it's real competitor).

This article is complete fluff and shouldn't be on Autospies or any other serious automotive blog.

Have to agree. No logic in pitting an A-class AMG against the M3 when the 1M would be the competition for this vehicle.

the article (and the all the hyperbole about the A-class AMG matching up with the similarly powerful S4 and much more powerful M3) came from BenzInsider.com. I'm sure it'll be a fun little hatch if Mercedes can figure out how to make their AMG's do more than drive straight very fast and/or fishtail around a track. But whether they figure out how or not, it'll be competing with the 1-Series and A1/A3, not the 3-Series and A4.

Why does it have to "dethrone" them? All of them are nice cars. As long as the person who purchases the car is happy then who cares? But that
"A" class should be compared to the 1M and S3. Not sure why they're (Autospies) comparing it to the M3 and S4? Whatever I guess.

The A-Class AMG version, like some pointed out, might be more of a competitor to the S3 or the 1-Series M version.

For the price of an AMG A class, give me the new Equus 5.0 V8, fully optioned out with a little aftermarket suspension tuning.
